All the great achāryas or religious preachers or reformers of the world executed their mission by adjustment of religious principles in terms of time and place. There are different climates and situations in different parts of the world, and if one has to discharge his duties to preach the message of the world, he must be expert in adjusting things in terms of the time and place.

So study my books and reproduce the purports in your own language. You should instruct your temple presidents to preach like this. This is preaching. We haven't got to invent something by our fertile brain for preaching. Everything is there. One who is expert for presenting these things before the audience so they can conveniently understand, this is a successful preacher. You have only to speak what Krsna has said. Then you become a preacher. (Prabhupada Letter to Jagadisa das 9th November, 1975)

What are the different types of yoga systems? What is the unique status of Krishna Consciousness?

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhakthivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, Founder Acharya, International Society for Krishna Consciousness, explains the words of Krishna in BHAGAVAD GITA AS IT IS (C-4, T-28):

dravya-yajnas tapo-yajna
yoga-yajnas tathapare
svadhyaya-jnana-yajnas ca
yatayah samsita-vratah

TRANSLATION
There are others who, enlightened by sacrificing their material possessions in severe austerities, take strict vows and practice the yoga of eightfold mysticism, and others study the Vedas for the
advancement of transcendental knowledge.

PURPORT

These sacrifices may be fitted into various divisions. There are persons who are sacrificing their possessions in the form of various kinds of charities. In India, the rich mercantile community or princely orders open various kinds of charitable institutions like dharma-sala, anna-ksetra, atithi-sala, anathalaya, vidya-pitha, etc. In other countries, too, there are many hospitals, old age homes and similar charitable foundations meant for distributing food, education and medical treatment free to the poor. All these charitable activities are called dravyamaya-yajna.

There are others who, for higher elevation in life or for promotion to higher planets within the universe, voluntarily accept many kinds of austerities such as candrayana and caturmasya. These processes entail severe vows for conducting life under certain rigid rules. For example, under the caturmasya vow the
candidate does not shave for four months during the year (July to October), he does not eat certain foods, does not eat twice in a day and does not leave home. Such sacrifice of the comforts of life is called tapomaya-yajna. There are still others who engage themselves in different kinds of mystic yogas like the Patanjali system (for merging into the existence of the Absolute), or hatha-yoga or astanga-yoga (for particular perfections). And some travel to all the sanctified places of pilgrimage

साधनाके दौरान आनेवाली अड़चनोंके विषयमें दृष्टिकोण :

Scroll down to read in English :

The most important factor to keep in mind for spiritual progress is an ‘intense yearning’. If we possess this yearning, we can overcome every obstacle and continue to progress on the path of spirituality. Please remember, there is no obstacle in the world which does not have a way to overcome it. Thus, seekers must always make an effort to overcome the hurdles and try to forge ahead regardless. According to my shreeguru Param Pujya (His Holiness ) Dr. Jayant Balaji Athavale, there are three factors – yearning, obstacles and our own spiritual level that play important role in our spiritual progress.
Yearning, obstacles and our spiritual level:
Importance of yearning in spiritual progress is as high as 80%, whereas obstacles and our own spiritual level play a role only to the extent of 10 per cent each. Thus, seekers who do not continue spiritual practice on the pretext of various obstacles, must understand that the real reason is a lack of yearning on their part.
So, the question arises, how to increase the yearning?
For that, please read the following points carefully and repeatedly
(i) Implant the impression and importance of spiritual practice in your subconscious mnd. For this, read simple, comprehensible books written by saints initially. India’s famous saints and yogis made their life worth emulating only by the virtue of spiritual practice. Thus, we must keep at it. Setting up of certain goals with regards to spiritual progress will help you in your determination.
(ii) Intellectually understand the importance of spiritual practice .
(iii) Human life is extremely precious and by continuous spiritual practice we make good use of this life. This fact should be imprinted in our mind.
(iv) After death, only the most subtle things go with us. Spiritual practice is the subtlest of all which gets easily carried forward with the embodied soul. It also makes the journey after death easier.
(v) As our mouth gets sweetened after having jaggery, similarly spiritual practice mitigates the material and spiritual obstacles and the mind begins to remain in constant bliss.
(vi) The one who has continued spiritual practice efficiently does get everything he seeks from God: from worldly fame and pleasure to spiritual bliss. This can be easily experienced by every seeker after practising sadhana.

Story of Origin of Mount Abu from hindu blog

Story of Origin of Mount Abu from hindu blog

Mount Abu located in Rajasthan in India is a holy place associated with Hinduism and Jainism. As per Hindu scriptures, the story of the origin of Mount Abu is associated with the holy cow, Nandini, getting trapped in a gorge in the current location of the holy mountain.

Legend has it that Sage Vasishta’s holy cow Nandini once fell into a deep gorge. The cow could not free itself. The sage then requested Lord Shiva to help. Shiva then directed Saraswati River to flood the gorge so that Nandini can float up.

Once Nandini was saved, Sage Vasishta decided to permanently fill the gorge so that such mishaps do not happen in future. The sage then requested the youngest son of Himalaya, king of mountains, to fill the gorge permanently.

The son of Himalaya took the help of a might snake named Arbud to fill the gorge. When they filled the gorge a mountain peak formed and the spot was called Mount Arbud. The name later changed to Mount Abu.

Bhisma Ashtami – Bhismashtami

Bhishma Ashtami, or Bhismashtami, is observed on the eighth day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon) of Magh Month (January – February) as per traditional Hindu calendar. In 2013, the date of Bhisma Ashtami is February 18. The day is dedicated to Bhisma of Mahabharata, popularly known as Bhisma Pitamaha or Ganga Putr Bhism. It is believed that his soul departed on this day.
Bhisma Pitamaha had got a boon from his father, Shantanu, that he will only die when he wishes. After the 18-day war in Mahabharat, it is believed that Bhisma chose the ashtami day on the Shukla Paksha of Magh month to leave his body and merge with the Supreme Soul. This happened during the auspicious Uttarayan period, the daytime of Devas.
A fast is observed by some communities on the day. In Bengal special pujas are held on the day.

Skanda the son of agni - Vadavagni – The Story of the Agni or Fire under the Ocean an Mayasita – The Story of Maya Sita

Skanda the son of agni
Skanda, popularly known as Muruga, Kartik, Subrahmanya and Shanmugha, is the son of Shiva. But there are some legends that suggest that Skanda is the son of Agni. As per this legend Skanda is the son of Agni and Goddess Svaha.

Legend has it that Agni was enamored by the beauty of the seven wives of Sapta Rishis or the seven sages – Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadhvaja, Vishvamitra, Gauthama, Jamadagni and Vashishta.

Goddess Svaha was worried that Agni would end up doing something stupid and would end up getting cursed by the Rishis.

Goddess Savaha then took the form of the six wives of Saptarishis and made love to Agni, her husband. Skanda was born to Goddess Svaha after this incident.

It must be noted that in the story of Skanda as son of Shiva, it is Agni who carries the fiery semen of Shiva to Ganga who deposits in the forest and where Skanda is born as six babies looked after by Krittika Nakshatra. The six babies are later joined together by Goddess Parvati.

Thus in all stories associated with Skanda, the presence of Agni is there.

is worshipped in Hinduism and it is believed that Agni, the god of fire, stayed in the tree after the curse by Sage Bhrigu. The sacredness of Shami Tree is due to Agni hiding in the tree.
Legend has is that Agni was cursed by Sage Bhrigu for providing wrong information regarding his marriage with Puloma.
Agni then hid underground to escape from the curse.
During this period, Devas lost heaven to demons. Only a son born from Shiva could defeat the demons.  For this Devas need the help of Agni.
But they could not locate Agni has he was missing. Finally Devas found Agni hiding in the Shami Tree. He helped Devas in the birth of Lord Kartikeya.
Related
Vadavagni is a form of Agni (fire) that is mentioned in the Hindu scriptures. It is believed that it is the escape of this fire from under the ocean which will finally consume the current cycle of creation and prepare the universe for the next cycle of creation.
Hindu Puranas states that Vadavagni was born in the lineage of Sage Bhrigu. The sons of Kartavirya Arjuna in order to finish off the lineage of the Sage Bhrigu started killing descendents of Bhrigu including children. A wise woman of the lineage, who was pregnant, in order to save her child moved the unborn child from her womb to her thighs. When the child was born it was called Aurva.
Later when the sons of Kartavirya came to know about the child they came to kill it. When they held it up they became blind due to the rays that emitted from the child’s body. The child’s anger did not subside and it gave rise to a flame which had the power to eat up the whole world. Sages then put the flame under the ocean. This is the story of Vadavagni.
Vadavagni is located beneath the ocean and has the face of a horse. Hindu Scriptures suggest that mists and clouds are formed due to the activity of the Vadavagni under the sea. It also prevents the sea from consuming the land.
Just before Pralaya, Vadavagni will burst forth as volcanoes from under the sea and escape. Subsequently the seas will consume the land.
There is a legend that the Sita that Demon Ravana kidnapped from the forest was not the real Sita but Mayasita – one that looked like Mata Sita. This interesting story is found in the Devi Bhagavatham but is not mentioned in the Valmiki Ramayan. One day when Sri Ram, Lakshman and Mata Sita were on exile in the forest, Agni Bhagavan – the Hindu Fire God – appeared before Sri Ram and reminded him that objective of his avatar was to kill Demon Ravana and the time has arrived for Ravan to kidnap Mata Sita.

Agni thought that it was improper for demon Ravana to touch Mata Sita, an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. Therefore Agni suggested that He will guard the original Sita and provide a Maya Sita to Sri Ram.

Sri Ram agreed and the original Sita was thus replaced with Mayasita.

Ravana thus kidnapped Mayasita from the forest.

After Ravana was killed, Lord Ram asked Mayasita to undergo Agnipariksha to prove her chastity. When Mayasita entered Agni (fire), Agni Bhagavan took her back and returned the original Mata Sita to Sri Ram.

Agni, is the Hindu God of fire

Agni, is the Hindu God of fire, and is worshipped from time immemorial – worshipped during the Vedic age. There are more hymns to Agni in Rig Veda than any other God. One of the most important roles of Agni is that He is the messenger between humans and gods. Fire is considered one of the five elements (Pancha Bhutas) in Hinduism.

Various theories are mentioned in scriptures regarding the origin of Agni. The most important among them is that Agni is the son of Earth and Sky. He is also referred as the offspring of Brahma.

Occasionally he is also mentioned as the son of Aditi and Rishi Kashyapa. Sometimes his is origin is also associated with Rishi Angiras.

In modern painting and sculptures Agni is represented as red or black in color, His vehicle is animal Ram. He is also guardian of the southeastern direction among the eight guardians of the directions.

Some of the important episodes associated with Agni in Hindu Scriptures

Rahu Ketu Puja at Srikalahasti Temple in Andhra Pradesh

Rahu Ketu Puja at Srikalahasti Temple is performed to ward off inauspiciousness in life, which arises due to the bad positioning of Navgrahas Rahu and Ketu in one’s horoscope. The popular belief is that performing the puja at Srikalahasti Temple in Andhra Pradesh in highly meritorious.

The ritual is mainly performed on Sunday and Monday. Another auspicious day chosen to perform the puja is Amavasya or No moon day. The puja is performed during Rahu Kalam – the most inauspicious time in a day as per Hindu astrology.
The New Indian Express writes about the puja
Kalahasthi is popular for its ‘Rahu-Ketu’ puja, which draws not just Indians, but also NRIs and foreigners from all over the world, especially Russia.
It may not be unsurprising, therefore, that the revenue earned through the puja exceeds the donations gained through the hundi by almost five times. While collection through hundi stood at Rs 7.25 crore during 2011-12, the revenue generated through ‘Rahu-Ketu’ pujas stood at Rs 30.23 crore for the same period.
Though there are many Shaivite temples situated across the country, Srikalahasti is the most popular for performing the ‘Rahu-Ketu’ puja as devotees trust all obstacles in their lives to disappear and be blessed with a life of health and wealth if they perform the puja at the temple, which is located on the banks of Swarnamukhi.
“We were advised by our elders to have the ‘Rahu-Ketu’ puja performed here, where the Navagrahas (nine planets) are ruled by Lord Shiva. Every year we perform the ritual, especially before starting a new work, so as to avoid unfavourable circumstances,” Rukmini, a housewife in Tirupati said.
Even famous celebrities from films, sports and politics perform the Dosha Nivarana puja.
The ritual, which lasts for about 40 minutes, is usually carried out during rahukalam (the inauspicious time), as devotees consider it more favourable to perform the puja during that period, especially on Sundays and Mondays.
People from Tamil Nadu find performing the puja on Amavasya (new moon day) more auspicious.

Ribhu Gita Teachings

O God of Incomparable Power, You are the Father of this creation consisting of movables and immovables. You are the Adorable One, The Preceptor, and the Glorius One. There is no equal to You in the three worlds, much less can any one excel You.
- Bhagavad Gita 11.43
O God of Incomparable Power, You are the Father of this creation consisting of movables and immovables. You are the Adorable One, The Preceptor, and the Glorius One. There is no equal to You in the three worlds, much less can any one excel You.
- Bhagavad Gita 11.43

Like bubbles arising on the waters of the ocean, gods and men and beasts of the phenomenal world arose, and will arise again and again, on the water of the mass of solid Bliss (Ghana ananda) – (Shiva). There is no worldly misery for those who, through their experience, perceive all this arising out of the waves of delusion clearly as myself.
Because of delusion, people do not realize Hara to be known as the cause of every little thing and as the cause of every being and also as the boundless cause of even greater dissolution. Destruction of mundane misery results when the Presence of Shiva shines in the reflecting pool of the recesses of the space of the heart.
Those who know do not offer worship by means of an endless parade of symbolism and with a mind set on rituals.
Those who know, however, worship inwardly, in abstract meditation, their mind attuned to the prescribed injunctions.
Ribhu Gita - Dialogue between Sage Ribhu and Sage Nidagha - It is believed that Sage Ribhu received the knowledge directly from Shiva.

How to sing Arti in spiritually correct way?

How to sing Arti in spiritually correct way?

Author: shoumik das /

Aarti

After blowing the conch, the Arti should be sung. There are certain factors which are necessary to perform an Arti and thereby increase the bhav (spiritual emotion) and sattvikta.

Spiritual emotion of the one singing the Arti

The Arti should be sung with the bhav that 'God Himself is standing in front and I am calling out to Him earnestly'.

The more the bhav one has while singing the Arti for God, the more enriched with bhav and sattva predominant the Arti will become. Such an Arti will reach the Lord faster. Individuals singing an Arti in this manner benefit as follows: The greater the collective bhav of the group singing the Arti, greater is the extent and period of preservation of the frequencies of Chaitanya (Divine consciousness) of Deities in the environment. This leads to a reduction in the distress from negative energies and gaining the benefit of Chaitanya. Every embodied soul should make an effort to perform the Arti with bhav. Also as a covering is formed on the ground by these sattva predominant vibrations (which stops the transmission of distressing frequencies from the Negative subtle regions), the worshipper's embodied soul benefits most from the Chaitanya. Thus during the Arti the worshipper's gross and subtle bodies get purified and results in his faster spiritual evolution. (Divine knowledge received through the medium of Ms Anjali Gadgil, 5.6.2005, 6.33 pm)

All of us do not necessarily have a good level of bhav. To enable even those having low bhav to perform Arti with increased bhav, Sanatan Sanstha has produced an audio cassette and CD in Marathi called 'Collection of Artis and Omkar sadhana'. The collection includes regular Artis of Lord Ganapati, Lord Shiva, Lord Rama, Lord Krishna, Datta, Maruti and Goddess Durga. These Artis have been sung by Ms Anjali Gadgil, a seeker of Sanatan Sanstha who has a high level of bhav, and other seekers. The Artis are enriched with bhav, sattvikta and Chaitanya. According to the spiritual principle that 'word, touch, form, taste, odour and the energy related to them, all coexist', if worshippers sing the Artis in the manner sung by these seekers with bhav, then it will help awaken bhav in them too at a faster pace.

Pronunciation and the technique of singing

Pronun-ciation while singing Arti should be correct as per the science of Spirituality. The sattvikta and Chaitanya generated from the words in the Arti depends on its pronunciation, speed of singing and also pronouncing the words either together or separately. To illustrate how the sattva component gets affected an example is given here: A line in Lord Krishna's Arti is as follows - Dhwajavajrankush bridacha todar.
This can be sung in two ways.

Method 1: Here 'da' in the word 'bridacha' is stretched.

Method 2: (Dhwajavajrankush bridacha todar)

Here 'cha' in the word 'bridacha' is stretched.

By uttering the word 'bridacha' in an even tone without any change in rhythm, the sattva component generated is 100 percent. However when singing the Arti, since there is the restriction of the rhythm, one has to sing it by stretching a specific alphabet in a word. When it is uttered as in method 1, 80 percent of sattvikta is generated from it. When uttered by method 2 only 60 percent sattva component is generated .This illustrates the importance of correct pronunciation of every word in any song. Only if the pronunciation is correct can one awaken bhav in a word. If an alphabet in the middle of a word is stretched then the last alphabet in the word has the capacity to bind the sound frequencies created by prolonging the middle alphabet. That is how words generate more Chaitanya, which lasts longer too. In contrast, if the last alphabet in a word is prolonged, then as there is no alphabet after it, the sound frequencies created are not held together. Instead, they disperse into the atmosphere immediately. The Chaitanya in such words lasts only for a moment and one does not derive the desired benefit from the sattva component in it. That is why it is beneficial to prolong the middle alphabet than the last one in a word. In the advanced stage of spiritual progress, singing a song in an even tone bestows more inner bliss and serenity than singing a song with rhythmic changes. (Divine knowledge received through the medium of Ms Anjali Gadgil, 19.1.2004, 10.59 am) (The audio-cassette and CD - 'Collection of Artis and Omkar sadhana' produced by Sanatan Sanstha will be very useful in learning how to pronounce the words. It is also beneficial to learn the manner in which some of the regular Artis should be sung so that they become sattva predominant.)

Singing the Arti after understanding their meaning

The Artis should be sung after understanding their meaning. Most of the Artis have been composed by Saints and evolved devotees; at times, it is difficult to understand the meaning of such Artis. Singing the Arti after understanding their meaning helps in an early awakening of bhav towards Deities.

(When the bhav of a worshipper is awakened, he is able to imbibe the Chaitanya emanating from Supreme God. Consequently the enthusiasm increases. - Compilers)
