Does Athma perform any activity in this body?

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhakthivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, Founder Acharya, International Society for Krishna Consciousness, explains the words of Krishna in BHAGAVAD GITA AS IT IS (C-5, T-14):

na kartrtvam na karmani
lokasya srjati prabhuh
na karma-phala-samyogam
svabhavas tu pravartate

TRANSLATION

The embodied spirit, master of the city of his body, does not create activities, nor does he induce people to act, nor does he create the fruits of action. All this is enacted by the modes of material nature.

PURPORT

The living entity, as will be explained in the Seventh Chapter, is one of the energies or natures of the Supreme Lord but is distinct from matter, which is another nature--called inferior--of the Lord. Somehow the superior nature, the living entity, has been in contact with material nature since time immemorial. The temporary body or material dwelling place which he obtains is the cause of varieties of activities and their resultant reactions. Living in such a conditional atmosphere, one suffers the results of the activities of the body by identifying himself (in ignorance) with the body. It is ignorance acquired from time immemorial that is the cause of bodily suffering and distress. As soon as the living entity becomes aloof from the activities of the body, he becomes free from the reactions as well. As long as he is in the city of body, he appears to be the master of it, but actually he is neither its proprietor nor controller of its actions and reactions. He is simply in the midst of the material ocean, struggling for existence.

The waves of the ocean are tossing him, and he has no control over them. His best solution is to get out of the water by transcendental Krsna consciousness. That alone will save him from all turmoil.

Importance of Tulsi from tanuja thakur blog

Importance of Tulsi
Tulsi is a sacred plant. It has been mentioned in Skandapuran that some of the drops of nectar fell on the earth during the process of Samudramanthan (churning of ocean). Tulsi was formed out of them. It was handed over to Lord Vishnu by Lord Bramha. Tulsi is liked by Lord Vishnu and hence it is specially offered to Lord Vishnu. While citing the importance of Tulsi it has been mentioned in Padmapuran that offering flowers made of gold, stones and pearls do not have even one sixteenth of the importance of Tulsi! Sins of even many eras are destroyed by sight, touch, meditation, obeisance, planting and use of Tulsi. All deities reside in the plant of Tulsi from its roots to the tip. It constantly emits the principles of deities and purifies the surrounding atmosphere. It is even said that whoever has a garden of Tulsi in the front yard of his house makes the surrounding nine miles area (yojan) as pure as river Ganga.

Power of mahaprasadam

Power of mahaprasadam
.
Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

The power of Mahaprasadam should never be underestimated. In Srimad Bhagavatam we have the story of Srila Narada Muni's previous birth which he narrates to Srila Vyasadev about how he became such a powerful devotee. In his previous life, Narada muni was serving in the ashram of a few sages along with his mother who was a maid-servant. He says in Srimad Bhagavatam verse 1.5.25:

ucchishta-lepaan anumodito dvijaih
sakrt sma bhunje tad-apaasta-kilbishah
evam pravrttasya vishuddha cetasas
tad-dharma evaatma rucih prajaayate

"Once only, by their permission, I took the remnants of their food, and by so doing all my sins were at once eradicated. Thus being engaged, I became purified in heart, and at that time the very nature of the transcendentalist became attractive to me."

Narada muni being a young boy, innocently took the remnants of the prasadam honored by the sages after taking their permission. As soon as he tasted the remnants, all his sinful reactions were immediately destroyed, his heart became purified and he was able to appreciate the nature of those sages. Such is the power of mahaprasadam. It is also said in the shastras about the power of association of a pure devotee thus:

saadhu-sanga, saadhu-sanga—sarva-shaastre kaya
lava-maatra saadhu-sange sarva-siddhi haya

"The verdict of all revealed scriptures is that by even a moment’s association with a pure devotee, one can attain all success."

Srila Prabhupada very nicely explains us that lava means one eleventh of a second. We find that in story of Mrgaari, the hunter who was so eager to hurt animals and leave them half-dead. But simply by association of Narada Muni for few moments, he changed into a great devotee and started chanting Mahamantra and became so kind that he didn't want to even hurt small ants while walking. Indeed prasadam or mercy of Lord and His pure devotees only has brought most of us on this path of bhakti.

There was an incident when Srila Prabhupada was travelling to South America with his two servants in the early 70's. One of the personal servants traveling with him was H.G. Srutakirti prabhu who shared this incident in remembrance of Srila Prabhupada after he had left this planet. The temple where they'd been, gave them a packed lunch for the plane, so in the air Srutakirti Prabhu, Prabhupada's servant opened Prabhupada's lunch pack and served him his prasadam of puffed rice and peanuts. Prabhupada had his fill and handed over the remnants to Srutakirti Prabhu who had just began eating, when the lady air hostess came and said, "That looks tasty", and grabbed a handful threw it in her mouth. Prabhupada smiled and Srutakirti Prabhu was somewhat shocked (since it is not a normal behavior to take someone else's food that too being an air hostess). She then asked why they bring their own food. Srutakirti Prabhu informed her that they are vegetarians etc. She immediately said, "Is there anything else I can get you, fruit milk?" Prabhupada said "Hot milk". Five minutes later she returned with three cups of hot milk she got from First class. Prabhupada thanked her and the devotees discussed among themselves Prabhupada remarking that it is a natural nature of a pious woman to serve.

Now coming to the second part of the story: Recently again in South America doing a preaching tour enlivening devotees there, Srutakirti Prabhu told the above story in Brazil. Afterward one devotee came up to Srutakirti prabhu and said that he would like to share an amazing story with him. This devotee was out in some remote village going door to door selling books when he knocked on a door, a lady opened the door wearing tilak. She then invited the devotee in and her house was like a little temple, an altar with deities, pictures on the walls and all of Prabhupada's books in Portuguese in her bookshelf. The devotee asked her how she became a devotee. She said she used to be an airline hostess several years ago and she met the author of these books, he was so saintly and gentle and kind that she looked up who he was and what he did from his boarding pass name. She then got some of his books and began to read, they said to chant so she chanted and offer her food to Krishna, so she did all that and became a devotee from that small contact. Indeed the potency of mahaprasadam from pure devotee and even a moment's association with such pure souls is un-imaginable.

So knowing the value of prasadam and the importance of saadhu sanga, we should neither waste prasadam nor miss the opportunity to take the wonderful association of devotees.

Thank you very much.
Your aspiring servant,
Sankar
Bangalore.

The Lord (Jagannatha) Himself comes

The Lord (Jagannatha) Himself comes

A new Tamil translation of Sankara’s Atmabodha with a commentary was sent to the Ashram. After glancing through it, Bhagavan sent it to the library. It was noticed that Bhagavan did not seem pleased with the translation.

Sending for a copy of Sankara’s Atmabodha from the library, Bhagavan began looking intently into it and after two days rendered two slokas into Tamil verse and showed them to the devotees. Overjoyed at seeing Bhagavan’s translation they
asked him to finish the whole work.

Although Bhagavan said, “Why, why?” he wrote some more saying, “though I feel disinclined to compose more verses, one after another comes and stands in front of me. What am I to do?”

Little by little the verses continued till all of them were translated. Addressing Sri Muruganar, Bhagavan with a smile said, “How is it I feel I have read this before? Is it possible that someone has already written this?”

Muruganar answered, “No one has written it in venba metre. What surprise is there, if one verse after another occurs to Bhagavan. It is said that in every kalpa the Vedas appeared as though they were standing before Brahma. This also is like that.”

Jayadeva's story is found in Panduranga Bhakta Vijayam. After writing the Gita Govindam, Jayadeva wrote Bhagavatam also in Sanskrit. On hearing about that, Krauncha Raja appealed to Jayadeva to read the Gita Govindam in the durbar hall and so
he began reading it.

People who heard him were so impressed with the writing and with his discourses that his fame spread in all directions and people came in large numbers to hear him. His fame spread so far that Jagannatha Swami, the presiding deity of Puri, was eager to listen to him.

So he started in the guise of a brahmin one day while the discourse was going on and entered the durbar hall of the king.

After blessing the king, he said, “Sir, I am a resident of Gokula Brindavan. I am a pandit well versed in all sastras. I have been searching all the world over for someone who could discuss the sastras with me on equal terms but so far I have not found any one. I am therefore itching for a discussion. I learned that Jayadeva was with you and so I came here. Where is he?” and when the people pointed out Jayadeva to him, he said,
disdainfully, “Oh! You are Jayadeva. Let me see. Let us discuss any one of the sastras you have studied,” and looking at him steadily, said, “What is that in your hands?” Without waiting for a reply, he snatched the book from his hands and said, “Oho! This is Bhagavatam. So you are a Pauranika? (one who gives discourses on the epics).

Who wrote this?” With fear and devotion Jayadeva said, “Sir, I am not a pandit to hold discussions with you. I humbly seek the blessings of elders like you. Though I do not have the courage to say before you that, I wrote this book, still as it will be a fault not to tell you the truth, I admit that I am its author.”

That brahmin pretended surprise and said, “What! If it is you
who wrote it, tell me, how could I have learnt all its contents by heart?”

So saying and without opening the book he began repeating the contents quickly, chapter by chapter. The king and the audience were amazed. Realising that Lord Jagannatha Himself had come in that form to shower his grace on him, Jayadeva prayed to him to reveal his real form (of Vishnu) with the conch, mace, chakra (discus) etc.

Pleased with the stotras (prayers), Lord Jagannatha revealed Himself in the various forms in which Jayadeva had invoked Him in his stotras, blessed him and disappeared.

VICTORY OF NARADA OVER 'KAMA' :

♥ ♥ ♥ OM NAMAH SHIVAY ♥ ♥ ♥ OM NAMAH SHIVAY ♥ ♥ ♥ OM NAMAH SHIVAY ♥ ♥ ♥ OM NAMAH SHIVAY ♥ ♥ ♥

MAHA SHIVAPURANA
continues............................................................................................................................

VICTORY OF NARADA OVER 'KAMA' :

Once upon a time Narada was performing a penance in the cave of Himalaya mountain. Indra
becoming fearful sent Kamadev to obstruct his penance. But Kamadeva was unsuccessful in his
attempt as the place where Narada was doing penance was the same place where Lord Shiva did
penance. After the completion of his penance, Narada became arrogant that he had defeated
Kamadeva. He went to Kailash mountain and narrated about his feat to Lord Shiva. Narada was
naïve not to realize the fact that is happened only because of the divine power of Shiva.
Lord Shiva listened to his arrogant statement. He advised Narada not to reveal this secret to
anybody. But Narada went to Brahmaloka and boasted about his feet to Lord Brahma.
Lord Brahma listened to his boisterous statements and advised him not to reveal this to anybody. But Narada was not satisfied. He wanted to give the news of his achievement to Lord Vishnu.
So, he went to Lord Vishnu's abode and boasted about his feat of defeating Kamdeva.
Lord Vishnu with a desire to subdue his inflated ego, manifested his illusionary power with the
blessings of Lord Shiva.
While Narada was returning from Vaikuntha Loka, he saw a beautiful city. This city was ruled
by a king named Sheelnidhi. The king had a daughter and her Swayamvar was being organised.
Numerous kings had arrived to take part in that Swayamvar. Narada, curiously entered the place
were Swayamvar was being held. The king requested Narada to study the lines of the palm of the
princess. Narada was infatuated by the princess‘ beauty. He returned back to Lord Vishnu and
expressed his desire of marrying that princess. He also requested Vishnu to make him as
handsome as himself (Vishnu).
Lord Vishnu made Narada's whole body very beautiful except his face. Which he made like a
monkey. Narada being unaware of this happily went back to Swayamvar site. Narada sat among
the kings - his face resembling like a monkey Lord Vishnu too was present there. The princess
saw Narada, whose face was looking like a monkey. She was amused. Ultimately she put the
garland around the neck of Lord Vishnu and went to Vaikuntha Loka alongwith him.
Some of the Shiva's gana too were present there in the guise of a brahmin. Their names were
Marud ganas. When they saw Narada told to see the reflection of his face in the water.
When Narada saw his face in the water, he saw that he was looking like a monkey. He became
very furious and cursed the Marudganas to be the born as demons, even though being brahmins
by birth.
Furious Narada then went to Lord Vishnu and cursed him- "You too would suffer due to
separation from your wife, during your incarnation of Rama and the monkey would come to your
help.
Lord Vishnu accepted Narada's curse without any hesitation. He then removed the illusionary
powers by which Naradas' mind was influenced. Now Narada regretted his actions. Lord Vishnu
told Narada that everything happened because of Shiva's divine illusions.
"You did not pay heed to his advice and hence Shiva by his illusions, has taught you a lesson.
Shiva is beyond the reach of the three basic qualities -Satva, Rajas and Tamas. Therefore you
must worship and contemplate on the name of Shiva. All of your sins will be destroyed.
After preaching Narada, Lord Vishnu vanished from his sight. Narada then descended down to
earth and while having darshan of numerous Shivalingas, he saw two of the Marudganas, whom
he had cursed. He told both of them that they would take birth from a giantess's womb, but their
father would be sages. He also told them that they would become very famous due to their
