Bhagavad Gita Kannada

Story of Bhakti Devi and Sons – The Merits of Reading Bhagavad Purana

A symbolic story mentioned in the Padma Purana extols the merits of reading Srimad Bhagavad Purana. The story is associated with Bhakti Devi and her sons. Legend has it that Bhakti Devi and her sons who were residing in South India, decided to walk up to Gokula.

The two sons of Bhakti Devi were named Jnana and Vairagya. During the long walk the mother and two sons became aged.

But as soon as they entered Gokula, Bhakti Devi became young again. But her two sons remained old.

Bhakti Devi asked Sage Narada who was at the time in Gokula to turn her sons young again.

Sage Narada took the help of Sanakadi Rishis. The Rishis asked Sage Narada to read out the Srimad Bhagavad Purana to the two sons. When Narada narrated the Bhagavad Purana the sons of Bhakti Devi became young again.

This story symbolically suggests that gaining jnana and practicing vairagya should not make a person aloof from society. He should not put on the garbs of maturity and keep people out. Along with Jnana and Vairagya one should practice Bhakti too.

Swami Chinmayananda – On Cultivating Noble Thoughts

What we regularly encourage and consistently cultivate in our mind – this determines our character formation, and ultimately, our destiny. Evidently, an intelligent choice of thought changes the character pattern in us – placing, thus, the entire destiny of our life in our own hands.

We must come to realize the power and strength, the need and value for an unshakable personal faith in discovering and developing the inner vitality in us and in that undaunted striving for fuller life.

The uplifting, inspiring thoughts that we entertain richly accumulate our mental wealth and intellectual treasure of purity, serenity, love, cheerfulness and aspiration for the nobler gains.

We must keep our mind constantly open to all helpful suggestions. There are always rich mines of healthy ideas lying broadcast throughout life’s fields; only we ignore them, refusing to explore them fully. Swami Chinmayananda

Krishna and Bhagavad Gita

Who is a yogi and happy in this world?

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhakthivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, Founder Acharya, International Society for Krishna Consciousness, explains the words of Krishna in BHAGAVAD GITA AS IT IS (C-5, T-23):

saknotihaiva yah sodhum
prak sarira-vimoksanat
kama-krodhodbhavam vegam
sa yuktah sa sukhi narah

TRANSLATION

Before giving up this present body, if one is able to tolerate the urges of the material senses and check the force of desire and anger, he is a yogi and is happy in this world.

PURPORT

If one wants to make steady progress on the path of self-realization, he must try to control the forces of the material senses. There are the forces of talk, forces of anger, forces of mind, forces of the stomach, forces of the genitals, and forces of the tongue. One who is able to control the forces of all these different senses, and the mind, is called gosvami, or svami. Such gosvamis live strictly controlled lives, and forgo altogether the forces of the senses. Material desires, when unsatiated, generate anger, and thus the mind, eyes and chest become agitated. Therefore, one must practice to control them before one gives up this material body. One who can do this is understood to be self realized and is thus happy in the state of self-realization. It is the duty of the transcendentalist to try strenuously to control desire and anger.

Hum sai ke Deewane hai

Nisargadatta Maharaj – Wise Words

You are that which is prior to the arrival of I-am-ness. When we did not know anything, that is our true state. That is reality. In that sate we did not even know our own existence.

Then spontaneously came the thought or the knowledge ‘I am.’ This knowledge started the sense of duality, subject and object, sin and merit and the entire gamut of interrelated opposites. Whatever was before the knowledge ‘I am’ is Truth. Whatever is subsequent is false.

Many names have been given to the sense of presence or I am ness: Maya, Prakriti, Ishwara etc, but nevertheless it is an illusion, pure ignorance.

Prakriti, with the cooperation of the conceptual Purusha creates the world and peoples it with innumerable forms. It is Maya in action that makes consciousness mistakenly believe that. It is the particular form itself. Thus it assumes the identity of the particular form and forgets its nature. Nisargadatta Maharaj

Story – Why Rice Offerings Are Made to Crows During Rituals Dedicated to the Dead?

Story – Why Rice Offerings Are Made to Crows During Rituals Dedicated to the Dead?

Cooked rice is offered to crows during rituals dedicated to the departed souls. The belief is that pitrs or dead ancestors and relatives in the form of crows come and eat the rice offered. The story as to why crows have the right to eat the rice offerings is found in the Uttara Ramayana.

Legend has it that once a king named Marutta performed a huge ritual named Maheshwara Sattara. Indra and all other demigods attended the ritual. Yama, the god of death, was also present at the function.

Ravana, the demon king, who heard about the assembly of the gods, visited the ritual with the intention of attacking the unarmed Devas.

Devas who came to know about the arrival of Ravana and his army fled the ritual arena assuming the forms of different birds.

Yama took the form of a crow and escaped from the area. Yama was pleased with the crow form.

He then gave crows the boon that when humans worship the departed souls with rice offerings, the crows will have the right to eat the rice

Story of Jayanta and Sri Ram

Story of Jayanta and Sri Ram is found in the Ramayana. Bhagvan Sri Ram, Mata Sita and Lakshman were residing in the Chitrakuta Mountain during their exile period in the Ramayana. Jaynata, son of Indra, in the form a crow was flying over the Chitrakuta and noticed the divine couple.

Sri Ram was lying on the lap of Mata Sita and sleeping. Jayanta came in the form crow and scratched Mata Sita. The painful cry of Sita woke up Sri Ram.

Bhagavan Sri Ram immediately realized that the crow was Jayanta and shot the Brahmastra against him.

Fearing for his life, Jayanta flew all over the world. But the divine arrow followed him.

Trimurtis, Devas and Saints could not save Jayanta. Finally, Jayanta took refuge at the feet of Sri Ram.

Bhagvan Sri Ram said that the Brahmastra could never become futile so the arrow will hit the right of Jayanta. Accordingly, the arrow struck the right of eye of Jayanta.

Note – It is also stated in some scriptures that it was not Brahmastra but darbha grass that Sri Ram threw on Jayanta.

Teachings of Rishabha

our pursuit should be the pursuit of the only knowledge worthwhile; the knowledge of Brahman.

Surrender yourself to the Lord. Dedicate your actions to Him. Listen to stories about Him and keep the company of the devotees of the Lord.

Hate no one because everyone is an image of the Lord.

Share the pain of others.

Control anger.

Be alone with yourselves whenever you can because solitude helps you to think of the Lord.

Do your duties properly. Do not neglect any of them.

Speak sparingly and think more.

Teachings of Rishabha is found in the chapter 4 and chapters 5 & 6 of Skandha V of Srimad Bhagavad Purana

Vivekachudamani on Brahman

Surely, this whole universe is Brahman! – Such is the august verdict of the Atharva Veda. Therefore, all that exists is Brahman and nothing but Brahman.

Under no condition can that which is superimposed upon any substratum, have an existence independent of that substratum. That is why everything that is manifested before our eyes in other words, this whole universe is the supreme Brahman, the one Reality, the One without a second, pure Being, pure Intelligence, the Unconditioned, the silent Peace, the Unlimited without beginning or end, the Witness who remains apart from all activity absolute Bliss.

And Brahman transcends the world of multiplicity produced by maya that other name for ignorance. He is eternal and can never be touched by a shadow of suffering. He is indivisible, incommensurable, without form, undifferentiated, inexpressible and immutable. He shines with his own Light!
Vivekachudamani (231, 237-38)

How Arjuna Got the Brahmastra in the Mahabharata?

Brahmastra, capable of annihilating the whole world, is an arrow possessed by very few warriors in the ancient world. Arjuna possessed the arrow and he was blessed with it by Drona, his Guru in the Mahabharata.
Once when Drona and his students were bathing in the Ganga River a huge fish like species caught hold of the leg of Drona. The Guru tried numerous means to pull his leg out but he could not move his leg from the mouth of the huge fish.
The students tried to pull out the Guru but they too failed. They tried numerous other means to save Drona but nothing yielded the desired result. The fish kept pulling Drona deep into the river.
On hearing the commotion, Arjuna appeared on the scene and immediately shot an arrow right on the head of the fish. The fish, writhing in pain, released the leg of Drona. The Guru then swam to safety.
Drona then rewarded his most favorite disciple for saving his life by imparting the knowledge of Brahmastra.
Arjuna was advised not to use Brahmastra against women and men who were not equal to him in warfare

Hare Krishna mantra

Hare Krishna mantra is recommended in Vedic literature for anyone seeking self-realization in the present age of quarrel and misunderstanding. Also known as the maha-mantra (great chant), it is made up of three Sanskrit names of the Supreme Being; "Hare," "Krishna," and "Rama:"

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

"Krishna" refers to the incomparable attractiveness of the Supreme Being, "Rama" indicates God as the source of all happiness, and "Hare" is a call to God's compassionate feminine aspect, Radharani. The mantra is often translated, "O Lord, O Energy of the Lord, please engage me in Your service."

Attentive chanting of this mantra frees one from anxiety, brings satisfaction to the self, enables one to experience their own spiritual nature, and delivers one ultimately to the supreme destination, or spiritual world. It is mentioned in some of the most ancient Puranas ("histories") and was popularized in the fifteenth century by Lord Chaitanya and spread worldwide by Srila Prabhupada in the late twentieth century.

As living spiritual souls we are all originally Krishna conscious entities, but due to our association with matter from time immemorial, our consciousness is now polluted by material atmosphere. In this polluted concept of life, we are all trying to exploit the resources of material nature, but actually we are becoming more and more entangled in her complexities. This illusion is called maya, or hard struggle for existence for winning over the stringent laws of material nature. This illusory struggle against the material nature can at once be stopped by revival of our Krishna consciousness.

Krishna consciousness is not an artificial imposition on the mind. This consciousness is the original energy of the living entity. When we hear the transcendental vibration, this consciousness is revived and the process is recommended by authorities for this age. By practical experience also, we can perceive that by chanting this maha-mantra, or the great chanting for deliverance, one can at once feel transcendental ecstasy from the spiritual stratum.

When one is factually on the plane of spiritual understanding, surpassing the stages of sense, mind and intelligence, one is situated on the transcendental plane. This chanting of Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare is directly enacted from the spiritual platform, surpassing all lower status of consciousness, namely sensual, mental, and intellectual.

There is no need of understanding the language of the mantra, nor is there any need of mental speculation, nor any intellectual adjustment for chanting this maha-mantra. It springs automatically from the spiritual platform, and as such, anyone can take part in this transcendental sound vibration without any previous qualification and dance in ecstasy. We have seen it practically. Even a child can take part in the chanting, or even a dog can take part in it.

This chanting should be heard from the lips of a pure devotee of the Lord so that immediate effect can be achieved. As far as possible, chanting from the lips of a non-devotee should be avoided, as much as milk touched by the lips of a serpent causes poisonous effect.

The word Hara is a form of addressing the energy of the Lord. Both Krishna and Rama are forms of addressing directly the Lord and they mean, "the highest pleasure eternal." Hara is the supreme pleasure potency of the Lord. This potency, when addressed as Hare, helps us in reaching the Supreme Lord.

The material energy, called maya, is also one of the multi-potencies of the Lord, as much as we are also marginal potency of the Lord. The living entities are described as superior energy than matter. When the superior energy is in contact with the inferior energy, it becomes an incompatible situation. But when the supreme marginal potency is in contact with the spiritual potency, Hara, it becomes the happy, normal condition of the living entity.

The three words, namely Hara, Krishna, and Rama, are transcendental seeds of the maha-mantra, and the chanting is a spiritual call for the Lord and His internal energy Hara for giving protect the conditioned soul. This chanting is exactly like the genuine cry of a child for its mother. Mother Hara helps the devotee achieve the grace of the Supreme Father, Hari or Krishna, and the Lord reveals Himself to the devotee who chants this mantra sincerely.

Therefore no other means of spiritual realization is as effective in this age of quarrel and hypocrisy as the chanting of the maha-mantra.

What kind of pleasure a liberated person has?

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhakthivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, Founder Acharya, International Society for Krishna Consciousness, explains the words of Krishna in BHAGAVAD GITA AS IT IS (C-5, T-21):

bahya-sparsesv asaktatma
vindaty atmani yat sukham
sa brahma-yoga-yuktatma
sukham aksayam asnute

TRANSLATION

Such a liberated person is not attracted to material sense pleasure or external objects but is always in trance, enjoying the pleasure within. In this way the self-realized person enjoys unlimited happiness, for he concentrates on the Supreme.

PURPORT

Sri Yamunacarya, a great devotee in Krsna consciousness, said:

yad-avadhi mama cetah krsna-padaravinde
nava-nava-rasa-dhamany udyatam rantum asit
tad-avadhi bata nari-sangame smaryamane
bhavati mukha-vikarah susthu nisthivanam ca

"Since I have been engaged in the transcendental loving service of Krsna, realizing ever-new pleasure in Him, whenever I think of sex pleasure, I spit at the thought, and my lips curl with distaste."

A person in brahma-yoga, or Krsna consciousness, is so absorbed in the loving service of the Lord that he loses his taste for material sense pleasure altogether. The highest pleasure in terms of matter is sex pleasure. The whole world is moving under its spell, and a materialist cannot work at all without this motivation. But a person engaged in Krsna consciousness can work with greater vigor without sex pleasure, which he avoids. That is the test in spiritual realization. Spiritual realization and sex pleasure go ill together. A Krsna conscious person is not attracted to any kind of sense pleasure due to his being a liberated soul.

The glory of God’s Name

The glory of God’s Name

Sage Vyās is the author of a Hindu Holy text, Mahābhārat. The following incident happened after He completed writing the Mahābhārat.

Sage Nārad and Sage Vyās were devotees of Shrī Nārāyaṇa and always sang the praises of Shrī Nārāyaṇạ. Once, Sage Nārad visited Sage Vyās and found him looking very sad. Sage Vyās welcomed Sage Nārad. Sage Nārad smiled at Sage Vyās and said, ''You must be very happy after completing the great Mahābhārat. This Holy text will be very useful for every human being. ”

Sage Vyās sat silently, without uttering a single word. Sage Nārad spoke again, “Are you worried about something?”

Sage Vyās replied, “Yes. O, great Sage, you are the only person who can clarify my doubt. ” He continued, “I thought that writing this Holy text would give me happiness, but instead I am not still happy. Why I am not feeling happy?”

Sage Nārad said, “You have written the Holy text Mahābhārat well, and I am sure people will be able to understand it easily, but you have forgotten something while writing the Holy text, that is why you are still not happy. “ He added further, “While writing it, you were only thinking about the various characters in it, you forgot about God, that is chanting His Name. When doing any activity, if one chants God’s Name, then one feels happy during and after completing that activity. Repeat His name once and tell me how you feel.''

Sage Vyās immediately followed the given guidance. He repeated Shrī Nārāyaṇa ̣’s Name once with intense faith and his unhappiness was gone. He felt happy and satisfied. From that day onwards, He started chanting Shrī Nārāyaṇa ̣’s name continuously.

Moral: The above story shows that even writing a great Holy text like the Mahābhārat, which is read by millions of people till today, cannot bring us the kind of happiness and peace that one can get by simply repeating (chanting) God’s Name. To experience this happiness, we, too, can follow Sage Vyā's example in immediately practicing whatever we have learned. Thus, we can start chanting right away and do so daily.

Who have already conquered the conditions of birth and death?

Who have already conquered the conditions of birth and death?

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhakthivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, Founder Acharya, International Society for Krishna Consciousness, explains the words of Krishna in BHAGAVAD GITA AS IT IS (C-5, T-18):

ihaiva tair jitah sargo
yesam samye sthitam manah
nirdosam hi samam brahma
tasmad brahmani te sthitah

TRANSLATION

Those whose minds are established in sameness and equanimity have already conquered the conditions of birth and death. They are flawless like Brahman, and thus they are already situated in Brahman.

PURPORT

Equanimity of mind, as mentioned above, is the sign of self realization. Those who have actually attained to such a stage should be considered to have conquered material conditions, specifically birth and death. As long as one identifies with this body, he is considered a conditioned soul, but as soon as he is elevated to the stage of equanimity through realization of self, he is liberated from conditional life. In other words, he is no longer subject to take birth in the material world but can enter into the spiritual sky after his death. The Lord is flawless because He is without attraction or hatred.

Similarly, when a living entity is without attraction or hatred, he also becomes flawless and eligible to enter into the spiritual sky. Such persons are to be considered already liberated, and their symptoms are described below.

Yoga Vasishta – Words To Remove Ignorance

Like the straight thin filament of a lotus stalk which does not part asunder, even though the stalk is broken, all the Vasanas which have been clinging to us from a long time are not and will not be destroyed except through a long continued practice of meditation and introspection.

The wise say that the best thing for a man to do in this world is to give up, without the least longing, Vasanas – all affinities for objects – which cause the mind to fluctuate and take men away from  moksha (liberation) and the stainless path.

Immense wealth, friends, relatives, Benares and other sacred places, bathing in the Ganges and other waters, the hermitage of Munis, religious austerities afflicting the body and other like things are not the sure means of ever reaching the higher state; but it is through the mind’s efforts that the immaculate and supreme Seat can be attained.
Yoga Vasishta
