Importance of Shiva Tandava Stotram
Shiva Tandava Stotram is an important prayer dedicated to
God Shiva. Ravana, the demon king in the Ramayana, is believed to have composed
the Stotra. The hymn glorifies Shiva as the Supreme Brahman.
Ravana was arrogant with his powers. So to impress Shiva, He
once attempted to life the Kailash
Mountain. Shiva to quell
the arrogance of Ravana simply placed his toe on the mountain. Ravana’s fingers
were crushed in the attempt and he could not remove it from under the Holy Mountain.
To remove his fingers and escape from the pain and impending
death, Ravana sang the Shiva Tandava Stotram.
Pleased with the Stotram, Shiva saved Ravana and blessed him
with the Chandrahas, a powerful weapon.
It is also stated that Ravana who was an ardent devotee of
Shiva used to sing the Stotram daily to the accompaniment of Ravanahatha, a
bowed fiddle that he had made.
