The devotees of the Lord are called akiñcanas because they have practically no material assets. Such material assets are all products of the three modes of material nature. They foil spiritual energy, and thus the less we possess such products of material nature, the more we have a good chance for spiritual progress.

Commenting on verses 28 and 29 of the second chapter of the first Book, the editor ably maintains that Sri Krsna is the only object of worship and that all the scriptural injunctions, austerities, sacrifices and religious observances are intended to please Him. 

In his scholarly introduction containing about 48 pages, the editor gives an interesting outline biography of Caitanya, including some of the events that took place during his sacred mission all over India for propagating his teachings among the people. The controversial discussions with Ramananda Roy and Prakasananda are noteworthy. In every event narrated, the author stresses the importance of bhakti towards Sri Krsna which is the kernal of the Caitanya doctrine. The introduction concludes with an English version of Caitanya's Siksastaka, a work in eight verses addressed to Sri Krsna. This first volume contains. Chapters 1 to 6 and the first seven verses of the seventh chapter of the first Book. Further volumes of this publication are eagerly awaited. The glossary appended to the volume gives explanations of the technical words used in the notes and comments.

HANUMAN MANTRA TO CALM THE MIND :
A turbulent and disturbed mind is the diagnostic center for most diseases and ailments. Disturbances in the physical body start expressing themselves through the mind as it is the only channel of expression. A calm mind is the indicator of good health; physical as well as physiological.

With this mantra you can calm not only your mind but also that of any other person who is going through a torrid time.

To use this mantra you have to chant it with concentration and while chanting the mantra sprinkle some water on the head and body of the mentally disturbed person. Alternately you can also apply some sacred ash [Vibhuti] or simply slowly rotate your hand over the head of that person.

Why and how should we engage in occupational engagements?

Srila Prabhupada writes in SRIMAD BHAGAVATHAM (1-2-9)

“Pure devotional service to the Lord is automatically followed by perfect knowledge and detachment from material existence. But there are others who consider that all kinds of different occupational engagements, including those of religion, are meant for material gain. The general tendency of any ordinary man in any part of the world is to gain some material profit in exchange for religious or any other occupational service. Even in the Vedic literatures, for all sorts of religious performances an allurement of material gain is offered, and most people are attracted by such allurements or blessings of religiosity.

Why are such so-called men of religion allured by material gain? Because material gain can enable one to fulfill desires, which in turn satisfy sense gratification. This cycle of occupational engagements includes so-called religiosity followed by material gain and material gain followed by fulfillment of desires. Sense gratification is the general way for all sorts of fully occupied men. But in the statement of Suta Gosvami, as per the verdict of the Srimad-Bhagavatam, this is nullified by the present sloka. 

One should not engage himself in any sort of occupational service for material gain only. Nor should material gain be utilized for sense gratification.

CHARITY AND ITS FAR REACHING IMPACT :
In the context of the experiences of Yamaloka, charity plays a significant role in mitigating the impact of punishments to a departed Soul. Sage Sanatkumara described: Paaneeyadaanam paramam daanamutthamam sada / Sarvesham Jeevapunjanam tarpanam Jeevanam smrutam (Charity of Water is considered as the best as it provides full contentment and life). This is why offering water outlets is considered as a satisfying act. Construction of water bodies, digging up of wells and supply of water through various means is thus a source of happiness to others and to self whose post-life experiences would become less pungent.

Those who facilitate the construction of ponds are doubly blessed giving instant relief to human beings, animals and birds in the long run far beyond the lives of the charity makers and attract considerable reduction of the burden of their sins. In fact, those who are responsible to perform this best charity of facilitating water supply in all seasons, especially summer, would never fall down the levels lower than heavens after life. Next to water is the charity of planting Trees which make available innumerable solaces to mankind, Sages, animals, birds, Devas and Danavas and even to Evil Spirits whose blessings are richly reaped by those responsible. Those who make available gardens with trees bearing fruits, flowers, shade and various other facilities to public are blessed for countless uses. Several other kinds of charity would certainly yield far reaching results and the acts of kindness however big or small do not indeed go waste. For instance, a person who donates an umbrella would help him to cross the hells without heat and provide him shade; or a person donating footwear would cross parts of hell the protection of feet. Charity of jewellery, cows, land, servants, chariot, food grains, beds, Vidya or Knowledge, money, horses, elephants and so on have all highly beneficial value with manifold returns.

EKADASI MAHATME - baratipura samsthana

    ~~ Pausha Putrada Ekadashi ~~

Putrada Ekadashi (lit. "ekadashi that is the giver of sons") is a Hindu holy day, which falls on the 11th lunar day (ekadashi) of the fortnight of the waxing moon in the Hindu month of Pausha (December-January). 

This day is also known as Pausha Putrada Ekadashi, to differentiate it from the other Putrada Ekadashi in Shravana (July-August), which is also called Shravana Putrada Ekadashi.

The fantastic glories of Putrada Ekadasi are told in the Bhavisyottara Purana, they cannot be vilified by any means. 

Sri Krsna said to Maharaj Yudhistira: "Oh my dear King, the Putrada Ekadasi is very great; It's power is incalculable. Anyone who practices penance by abstinence of eating on this day, receives immeasurable benediction from the Personality of Godhead. All ones sinful reactions are eradicated and great wealth, fame and sagacity await with folded palms, eager to serve one who observes this Ekadasi.

"There was once a great city named Bhadravati, and a revered King named Suketumana ruled that land. His principle queen was Saivya and she was exquisitely beautiful. Despite being surrounded by great material opulence the maharaja was despondent, for they had no son. The King and Queen spent much time performing religious activities, with a hope to one day conceive an heir.
"Because they were afflicted with great sorrow and misfortune, their tempers grew hot and their brains boiled with furious agitation for the chance to have a son. As a result their offerings were always hot. Meanwhile the Kings forefathers also worried and aggrieved by the inauspicious atmosphere, thought thus: "If there are no offspring there will be no one to offer oblations to us and deliver us from pitrloka."

"King Suketumana could feel the anxiety of his forefathers and grew ever increasingly determined to fulfil his obligation to them and beget a son. He also grew more and more morose, however. He found no pleasure in his sports or recreations; he lost the taste for hunting, found no pleasure in the music of the courtiers, and he even became recluse from his friends and well-wishers. Merged in a fathomless ravine of staggeringly embarrassing hopelessness, the maharati King considered his life useless.

"He thought that, without a son there would be no way of alleviating the debts to the demigods, forefathers and future generations. Without being favoured by Sri Visnu one cannot conceive a child, amass wealth or retain knowledge. Upon finding zero solace in his court the King left for the forest riding on a gleaming white horse.

"King Suketumana entered the mighty forest that lay on the edge of his kingdom, surrounded by a chorus of many birds. Unbeknown to him, many wild beasts and cats silently watched him enter the eerie place; so quiet and still with moss. As the lonesome King passed deeper and deeper into the wood, he passed many great trees. He saw Pipala and Date, Tamarind and Palm, Shal and Maulsiri, Saptaparna and Sarala, Tilak and Tamala and many others. Entering a clearing he came before a mammothian Banyan tree, with branches springing up here, there and everywhere. Hiding on, among and around the branches he saw many wild animals such as Snakes, Elephant, Deer, Monkeys, Wild Boar, Leopards, Tigers and Lions.

"The king became frightened by the racous howls of fearsome jackal packs and the plaintive hoots of nightbound owls. Wandering in this way through the wet wilds, he thought thus: "I have performed so many sacrifices, fed many brahmanas still I am suffering; what sacrifice can there be to free me from my rueful plight."

"Suddenly he came across a brilliant lake with many cakora birds, swans and chakravaka sporting upon it's crystalline waters. The vision was easily as lovely as Kusuma Sarovara. On seeing many sages chanting mantras on the banks of this lake, King Suketumana approached them and offered obeisances to each of them in turn. The sages, being pleased with the Kings humility spoke thus: "Oh dear King, we are very satisfied with your stately respects and devotions and are prepared to assist you in your troubles. Please ask a benediction of us!"

"The King Said, "Who are you, why have you come to this place? I am a King bereft of a son and therefore my whole kingdom seems void. How can I get a son and thereby mitigate the suffering of my citizens.

"The sages replied, "We are Visva devas, we come here regularly to take bath in these sanctified waters. Today is Putrada Ekadasi, anyone who observes this Ekadasi pleases Sri Visnu to great ends and has all his material and spiritual desires fulfilled. If one desires a son, he will assuredly get one by following this Ekadasi vrata.
"The king recounted: "I have observed many sacrifices for getting a son, yet none have been sucessful. Please bless me, so that I may be fortunate and receive my hearts desire, a son and heir to the throne.

"Simply observe this Ekadasi with great care and attention." Replied the sages. "Give up eating on this day, remain awake and chant the glories of Hari, by the mercy of Godhead you will conceive a son.

"Thereafter, the King observed Putrada Ekadasi. He broke fast the next day and after offering many respectful obeisances unto the sages, he returned to his Kingdom. I due course of time Queen Saivya became pregnant. By the influence of Putrada Ekadasi and the blessings of the sages, the King begot an intelligent and pious son. Thereafter the King happily ruled his Kingdom and his forefathers became pleased.

Lord Krsna continued, "Oh King Yudhistira, anyone who observes Putrada Ekadasi can get a son and attain the heavenly planets. Anyone who simply hears or sings the glories of this Ekadasi certainly achieves the result of performing an Asvamedha sacrifice.

Despite being surrounded by great material opulence the maharaja was despondent, for they had no son. The King and Queen spent much time performing religious activities, with a hope to one day conceive an heir.
    "Because they were afflicted with great sorrow and misfortune, their tempers grew hot and their brains boiled with furious agitation for the chance to have a son. As a result their offerings were always hot. Meanwhile the Kings forefathers also worried and aggrieved by the inauspicious atmosphere, thought thus: "If there are no offspring there will be no one to offer oblations to us and deliver us from pitrloka."

    "King Suketumana could feel the anxiety of his forefathers and grew ever increasingly determined to fulfil his obligation to them and beget a son. He also grew more and more morose, however. He found no pleasure in his sports or recreations; he lost the taste for hunting, found no pleasure in the music of the courtiers, and he even became recluse from his friends and well-wishers. Merged in a fathomless ravine of staggeringly embarrassing hopelessness, the maharati King considered his life useless.

    "He thought that, without a son there would be no way of alleviating the debts to the demigods, forefathers and future generations. Without being favoured by Sri Visnu one cannot conceive a child, amass wealth or retain knowledge. Upon finding zero solace in his court the King left for the forest riding on a gleaming white horse.

    "King Suketumana entered the mighty forest that lay on the edge of his kingdom, surrounded by a chorus of many birds. Unbeknown to him, many wild beasts and cats silently watched him enter the eerie place; so quiet and still with moss. As the lonesome King passed deeper and deeper into the wood, he passed many great trees. He saw Pipala and Date, Tamarind and Palm, Shal and Maulsiri, Saptaparna and Sarala, Tilak and Tamala and many others. Entering a clearing he came before a mammothian Banyan tree, with branches springing up here, there and everywhere. Hiding on, among and around the branches he saw many wild animals such as Snakes, Elephant, Deer, Monkeys, Wild Boar, Leopards, Tigers and Lions.

    "The king became frightened by the racous howls of fearsome jackal packs and the plaintive hoots of nightbound owls. Wandering in this way through the wet wilds, he thought thus: "I have performed so many sacrifices, fed many brahmanas still I am suffering; what sacrifice can there be to free me from my rueful plight."

    "Suddenly he came across a brilliant lake with many cakora birds, swans and chakravaka sporting upon it's crystalline waters. The vision was easily as lovely as Kusuma Sarovara. On seeing many sages chanting mantras on the banks of this lake, King Suketumana approached them and offered obeisances to each of them in turn. The sages, being pleased with the Kings humility spoke thus: "Oh dear King, we are very satisfied with your stately respects and devotions and are prepared to assist you in your troubles. Please ask a benediction of us!"

    "The King Said, "Who are you, why have you come to this place? I am a King bereft of a son and therefore my whole kingdom seems void. How can I get a son and thereby mitigate the suffering of my citizens.

    "The sages replied, "We are Visva devas, we come here regularly to take bath in these sanctified waters. Today is Putrada Ekadasi, anyone who observes this Ekadasi pleases Sri Visnu to great ends and has all his material and spiritual desires fulfilled. If one desires a son, he will assuredly get one by following this Ekadasi vrata.
    "The king recounted: "I have observed many sacrifices for getting a son, yet none have been sucessful. Please bless me, so that I may be fortunate and receive my hearts desire, a son and heir to the throne.

    "Simply observe this Ekadasi with great care and attention." Replied the sages. "Give up eating on this day, remain awake and chant the glories of Hari, by the mercy of Godhead you will conceive a son.

    "Thereafter, the King observed Putrada Ekadasi. He broke fast the next day and after offering many respectful obeisances unto the sages, he returned to his Kingdom. I due course of time Queen Saivya became pregnant. By the influence of Putrada Ekadasi and the blessings of the sages, the King begot an intelligent and pious son. Thereafter the King happily ruled his Kingdom and his forefathers became pleased.

    Lord Krsna continued, "Oh King Yudhistira, anyone who observes Putrada Ekadasi can get a son and attain the heavenly planets. Anyone who simply hears or sings the glories of this Ekadasi certainly achieves the result of performing an Asvamedha sacrifice.

KRISHNARJUNA - GEETA




Arjuna asks how Krishna could instruct Gita to Vivasvan (sun god)earlier!

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhakthivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, Founder Acharya, International Society for Krishna Consciousness, explains the words of Krishna in BHAGAVAD GITA AS IT IS (C-4, T-4):

arjuna uvaca
aparam bhavato janma
param janma vivasvatah
katham etad vijaniyam
tvam adau proktavan iti

TRANSLATION

Arjuna said: The sun-god Vivasvan is senior by birth to You. How am I to understand that in the beginning You instructed this science to him?

PURPORT

Arjuna is an accepted devotee of the Lord, so how could he not believe Krsna's words? The fact is that Arjuna is not inquiring for himself but for those who do not believe in the Supreme Personality of Godhead or for the demons who do not like the idea that Krsna should be accepted as the Supreme Personality of Godhead; for them only Arjuna inquires on this point, as if he were himself not aware of the Personality of Godhead, or Krsna. As it will be evident from the Tenth Chapter, Arjuna knew perfectly well that Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the fountainhead of everything and the last word in transcendence. Of course, Krsna also appeared as the son of Devaki on this earth. How Krsna remained the same Supreme Personality of Godhead, the eternal original person, is very difficult for an ordinary man to understand.

Therefore, to clarify this point, Arjuna put this question before Krsna so that He Himself could speak authoritatively. That Krsna is the supreme authority is accepted by the whole world, not only at present, but from time immemorial, and the demons alone reject Him. Anyway, since Krsna is the authority accepted by all, Arjuna put this question before Him in order that Krsna would describe Himself without being depicted by the demons who always try to distort Him in a way understandable to the demons and their followers. It is necessary that everyone, for his own interest, know the science of Krsna.

Therefore, when Krsna Himself speaks about Himself, it is auspicious for all the worlds. To the demons, such explanations by Krsna Himself may appear to be strange because the demons always study Krsna from their own standpoint, but those who are devotees heartily welcome the statements of Krsna when they are spoken by Krsna Himself. The devotees will always worship such authoritative statements of Krsna because they are always eager to know more and more about Him. The atheists, who consider Krsna an ordinary man, may in this way come to know that Krsna is superhuman, that He is sac-cid-ananda-vigraha--the eternal form of bliss and knowledge--that He is transcendental, and that He is above the domination of the modes of material nature and above the influence of time and space. A devotee of Krsna, like Arjuna, is undoubtedly above any misunderstanding of the transcendental position of Krsna.

Arjuna's putting this question before the Lord is simply an attempt by the devotee to defy the atheistic attitude of persons who consider Krsna to be an ordinary human being, subject to the modes of material nature.

>>> PARAMAHAMSA BABAJI MEETS HIS DISCIPLE <<<

…An austere sannyasi approached Paramahamsa Babaji and again and again offered dandavat obeisances at his feet.
Then the humble babaji began to weep: Saying, “O Lord Caitanya, O Lord Nityananda, please be merciful upon me, a fallen soul." 
Then the sannyasi said to the saintly babaji, “O master, I am very lowly and fallen. Why, imitating my actions, do you mock me in this way?" Then, taking the dust of the babaji's feet, the sannyasi sat down before him.
Giving the sannyasi a tree-bark sitting place, and then sitting beside him, the humble Paramahamsa Babaji, his words choked with spiritual love, said, "O master, I am a fallen soul. How may I serve you?"

Setting down his kamandalu, the regal sannyasi respectfully folded his hands and said, "O master, I am very unfortunate. I studied the sankhya, patanjala, nyaya, vaisheshika, purva-mimamsa, and uttara-mimamsa philosophies. I studied the Vedanta, Upanishads, and many other scriptures also. I traveled on pilgrimage to Varanasi and many other holy places. I spent much time debating with others the meaning of the scriptures.”

“It is twelve years now since I accepted a sannyasi danda from Srila Saccidananda Sarasvatipada. After I accepted the danda I spent my time always traveling to all the holy places. Wherever I went in Bharata-varsha I always associated with the sannyasi followers of Shankaracarya. Passing through the stages of kuticaka, bahudaka, and hamsa, after a few days I attained the stage of paramahamsa, then I stayed always at Varanasi.

Observing a vow of silence, I took shelter of the sayings `aham brahmasi' (I am Brahman), `prajnanam brahma' (Brahman is consciousness), and `tat tvam asi' (You are that), which Shankara declares are the maha-vakyas (most important statements of the scriptures).
Then one day a saintly Vaisnava singing songs about Lord Hari's pastimes came before me. Opening my eyes wide, I gazed at him. He was bathed by the tears flowing from his eyes, and the hairs of his body stood erect in ecstasy. In a choked voice he chanted, `Sri Krsna Caitanya! Prabhu Nityananada!' Again and again he danced with faltering steps. Sometimes he fell to the ground.

As I gazed at him and heard his song, my heart became filled with love, a love I have no power to describe. Even though I became filled with love, I followed the rules of paramahamsa life and I did not speak a word to him.
I am pathetic, my rules of paramahamsa life are pathetic, and my so-called good fortune is also pathetic. Why did I not speak to him?”

"Since that day my heart has been irresistibly drawn to the feet of Sri Caitanya. I became very agitated. I spent many days searching for that Vaisnava, but I did not see him anywhere.
When I saw that Vaisnava and heard the Holy Names from his mouth I became filled with a pure and sacred bliss. Before that time I did not know that such a bliss existed anywhere. I did not think it was possible for a human being to experience such bliss.
After some days of thinking I decided that it would be best for me to take shelter of the feet of a Vaisnava. Then I left Varanasi and went to Sri Dhama Vrindavana.

There I saw many Vaisnavas. Every one of them was calling out the names `O Sri Rupa! O Sri Sanatana! O Sri Jiva Gosvami!' and lamenting. They were all meditating on Sri Sri Radha-Krishna's pastimes and, in voices choked with love, calling out the name of Navadvipa.
From that moment I have yearned to see Navadvipa. After a 168 mile journey from Sri Vraja-dhama, I arrived in Mayapura a few days ago. 
In Mayapura town I heard of your glories, so now I have come to take shelter of your feet. Please be merciful to me, accept me as your servant, and give my story an ending that is good."

Weeping again and again, and humbly placing a blade of grass between his teeth, the saintly paramahamsa said, "O saintly sannyasi, I am very unfortunate. I fill my belly, I sleep, I speak useless gossip. In this way I have wasted my life.
Now I pass my days in the place where Sri Krsna Caitanya enjoyed His pastimes. Still, I have no power to taste what is true love for Lord Krsna.

The Saintly Sri Prema Dasa Babaji said to this sannyasi: “You are fortunate. Gazing at a Vaisnava, for a moment, you tasted that love. You have received the mercy of Lord Krsna Caitanya. If, when you taste pure spiritual love, you once remember this fallen person, my life will be a great success.”
Speaking again and again in this way, the saintly babaji tightly embraced the saintly sannyasi and bathed him with the tears flowing from his eyes. Touched by a Vaisnava, the saintly sannyasi felt an emotion he had never known before. He danced and wept. 

As he danced, he sang this verse:
jaya shri-krishna chaitanya shri prabhu nityananda
jaya shri-prema-dasa guru jaya bhajana ananda
Glory to Sri Krishna Chaitanya! Glory to Lord Nityananda! Glory to my spiritual master, Sri Prema-dasa! Glory to the bliss of devotional service!
