Fractal Enlightenment

If a man were deprived of his illusions and all that prevents him from seeing reality…all his strivings would collapse, everything would become empty and there would remain an empty being, an empty body, only physiologically alive. ~ This would be the death of 'I,' the death of everything it consisted of, the destruction of everything false collected through ignorance or inexperience. ~…Then a man will be able to choose for himself and not have imposed on him what others like. ~ Gurdjieff

Karmayoga

Karmayoga

The word ‘Karmayoga’ (Path of Action) conjures images of those giving alms to beggars, setting up educational institutions and those engaged in social service. However, in most cases, since these activities are at an emotional level or for the sake of publicity, it does not constitute Karmayoga in the real sense of the word. Then, what exactly is Karmayoga?

Ramana Hridayam THERE IS NO KNOWLEDGE AND NO IGNORANCE FOR A JNANI

THERE IS NO KNOWLEDGE AND NO IGNORANCE FOR A JNANI

Bhagavan: An ajnani sees someone as a Jnani and identifies him with the body. Because he does not know the Self and, mistakes his body for the Self, he extends the same mistake to the state of the Jnani. The Jnani is therefore considered to be the physical frame.

Again since the ajnani, though he is not the doer, yet imagines himself to be the doer and considers the actions of the body his own, he thinks the Jnani to be similarly acting when the body is active. But the Jnani himself knows the Truth and is not confounded. The state of a Jnani cannot be determined by the ajnani and therefore the question troubles only the ajnani and never does it arise for the Jnani. If he is a doer he must determine the nature of the actions. The Self cannot be the doer. Find out who is the doer and the Self is revealed. ....

Q: So it amounts to this. To see a Jnani is not to understand him. You see the jnani’s body and not his jnanam. One must therefore be a Jnani to know a Jnani?

M.: The Jnani sees no one as an ajnani. All are only jnanis in his sight. In the ignorant state one superimposes his ignorance on a Jnani and mistakes him for a doer. In the state of jnana, the Jnani sees nothing separate from the Self. The Self is all shining and only pure jnana. So there is no ajnana in his sight.

There is an illustration for this kind of allusion or super-imposition. Two friends went to sleep side by side. One of them dreamt that both of them had gone on a long journey and had strange experiences. On waking up he recapitulated them and asked his friend if it was not so. The other one simply ridiculed him saying that it was only his dream and could not affect the other.
So it is with the ajnani who superimposes his illusive ideas on others.

Regarding ajnana in early youth and jnana at the present time, Sri Bhagavan said: There is no jnana as it is commonly understood. The ordinary ideas of jnana and ajnana are only relative and false. They are not real and therefore not abiding. The true state is the non-dual Self. It is eternal and abides whether one is aware or not. It is like kanthabharana or the tenth man.

D.: Someone else points it out.
M.: That one is not external. You mistake the body for the Guru. But the Guru does not think himself so. He is the formless Self. That is within you; he appears without only to guide you.

GEETA

"Because they are only matter, the body, the life airs, the external and internal senses, the five gross elements and the subtle sense objects [form, taste, smell, sound and touch] cannot know their own nature, the nature of the other senses or the nature of their controllers. But the living being, because of his spiritual nature, can know his body, the life airs, the senses, the elements and the sense objects, and he can also know the three qualities that form their roots. Nevertheless, although the living being is completely aware of them, he is unable to see the Supreme Being, who is omniscient and unlimited. I therefore offer my respectful obeisances unto Him." - SB 6.4.25

"One is always a servant of lusty desires, anger, greed, illusion, envy and so forth, but if one obtains sufficient strength in spiritual advancement, one can control them. One who obtains such control will always be transcendentally situated, untouched by the modes of material nature." - purport SB 6.4.14

Both egg and milk comes from animal body only. Then, why milk is allowed, but egg is not allowed?

    EXTREMELY IMPORTANT:

Both egg and milk comes from animal body only. Then, why milk is allowed, but egg is not allowed?

    COUNSELLING:

(As this question seems to be connected with yesterday’s counselling, I answer immediately as you can have a continuity in reading.)

    “Sailesh Kumar” asked like this:

“sir. i joind this group recently n read today counseling. u said we can drink milk, but egg not allowd. why. both egg n milk comes frm animals only. why this discremination? so, i think egg is also vegetarian. pl clarify.”

    REPLY:

Interesting Question. But, there are major differences between an egg and milk.

Milk is a product created by Krishna exclusively for drinking purposes. There is no other purpose for milk. It is a natural health drink that contains all the required ingredients. If you do not draw milk from the body regularly, the woman or cow will die as many diseases will come like even breast cancer in due course of time. So, the milk MUST BE taken out of the body. If we draw milk from mother’s body or cow’s body, we are in fact helping the mother or cow. So, drawing milk from mother/ cow is a good and necessary act and that milk is produced daily JUST TO CONSUME, not to waste.

It is the wonderful and delicious product given for us by Krishna. It has Calcium and Vitamin-D for bones, B-Group Vitamins for intelligence and healthy brain, Protein for growth and many minerals for a healthy body. Just by drinking mother’s milk throughout the day, a child grows for 7-8 months till it is fed solid food. So, milk is a food.

Now let us come to egg. EGG - the name itself shows that it is the REPRODUCTIVE PRODUCT, NOT A FOOD PRODUCT.

EGG means WOMEN REPRODUCTIVE PRODUCT produced by women’s body every month and hence, it has some ingredients inside that can produce a new baby when it receives a sperm cell from male. So, egg is for REPRODUCTIVE PURPOSE, not for food purpose. When the egg produced in a woman’s body does not receive any sperm to connect and fertilise in any month, after 26-28 days, that egg is sent out of the woman’s body in broken state that is called menstruation, ie, monthly periods, ie, a waste product. Similarly, hens produce eggs and and sends out that egg periodically. So, this hen’s egg is considered as the menstruation of that hen.

Now, tell me, are milk and egg same? A person can drink his mother’s milk. But, how can the menstruation be a consumable product? So, why should we compromise our standing by eating the menstruation of a hen? why should we proudly eat egg products like omlette, Half Boil, egg roast, egg dosa, egg briyani, egg barotta, etc, etc...? They are roasting the menstruation of hen and eat..

Doesn’t it seem nonsense? Why do you compare this waste product with an essential food milk? Milk is suitable from baby to old man. Mother’s milk is available till we are 2-3 years old. But, after our age 3, cow becomes our mother feeding milk for us. Because, cow’s milk is suitable for humans also.

Only thing we have to keep in mind while drawing milk from cow is, first feed the calf to its full requirement and then draw milk from cow for us. Without allowing the calf to drink milk from its mother, we should not draw milk.

Now do you understand that egg is given by Lord for REPRODUCTION ONLY and if not fertilised, it is a waste product (menstruation), but, milk is an essential product given by Lord for consumption only?

That is why milk, being a food product, is vegetarian though comes out of animal’s body, but, egg is non-vegetarian and in fact, not for eating purposes. If you say milk is non vegetarian, our mother's milk should also be non vegetarian. Who will accept this?

So, happily consume milk and forget eggs. Nothing lost. Hare Krishna. Krishna, Thanks for giving me patience to explain these things.

    TAIL PIECE:

There is a speciality for milk. If you honour only prasadam daily and do not eat outside, there is an excemption for milk and fruits. You can get milk from others -even from shops- and drink it. This relaxation is given only for milk and fruits that can be bought and eat even from non-devotees. Remember, not coffee, but, milk only.

CHADWICK ABOUT SELF-REALIZATION

How does attainment actually occur? On this question of attaining Self-realization Bhagavan told me that in the early stages a person who was regularly meditating would usually at first go into a trance which would probably last for some thirty minutes, and if he continued with his Tapas properly such Samadhi would become more frequent. So carried away by it would he be that he would be able to think of nothing but slipping away to some quiet corner to meditate undisturbed. He would lose all interest in everything else until that time when he became established in the Self and no more meditation was necessary.

He had then attained Sahaja Samadhi or his natural state. But there were no fixed rules. Some might attain this state quietly and unrecognized, without even the necessity of the process of meditation. However, Bhagavan explained, although there were no actual stages in Self-realization, there was a deepening of one’s Sadhana as explained above.

In the Indian spiritual vocabulary you find the terms Manolaya, Savikalpa Samadhi, Nirvikalpa Samadhi and Sahaja Samadhi, and these are apt to cause some confusion to those not familiar with the terminology.

Manolaya is just a blank mind. Advaitins are often accused of trying to achieve this, which is quite absurd though I have at times met those who told me that this was their aim, and they would be most happy to achieve it. I would point out to them that this could be attained by them every night in sleep so what was the use of undergoing all sorts of austerities, spending hours in meditation to obtain a thing that could be got by just lying down on their bed?

With regard to this Bhagavan used to tell the story of the Yogi who was practicing Tapas on the bank of the Ganges. He told his disciple to go and fetch him some water and in the meantime went into a state of Manolaya. After a thousand years he awoke, the first thing he did was to demand his water, but the disciple had become skeleton at his side, the Ganges had changed its course and the whole country was different. What good had the long trance done? It had just been a blank when time stood still.

Savikalpa Samadhi is the state of deep meditation when one is sunk in peace but still retains the consciousness of one’s identity. One knows that one is meditating and can still consciously continue one’s Sadhana.
In Nirvikalpa Samadhi one has attained to a state where the identity has been lost and sunk entirely in the highest Self. However long it may last it is only temporary, one must return eventually to one’s normal state of consciousness.
One is unable to function in this state and so long as it lasts one is in a state of trance. It is usually preliminary to the final state. But Bhagavan attained Sahaja Samadhi directly without any intermediate state. Many people consider that Nirvikalpa Samadhi is final, and once having attained it seek to progress no further.

Sahaja Samadhi is the final and most blessed state, the goal of all Yogis. In this state the individual has become completely merged in the Supreme Self. His identity which became lost in Nirvikalpa Samadhi has become enlarged and is now the Supreme Self and knows itself as such. Trances are no longer necessary, a person can still carry on with the ordinary day to day business but he no longer identifies himself with the activities, but watches them like a dreamer watching a dream. There is no more to do, and no more to be attained. This is the Supreme State of Absolute Bliss. But in the simple words of Bhagavan, it is the SELF and it can be realized by one and all by Self-enquiry.

    Respected Holy Father,

I live in India since 33 years and can assert with full confidence that India has no need of Christian missionaries, and yet huge sums of money are being pumped in to lure converts with material benefits and to build churches. I am aware that Your Holiness is responsible only for Catholics and not for the myriad of other Christian denominations that prey on poor Hindus, but if the Catholic Church made a start of truly respecting Hindus, it would have a big impact.

Your Holiness is aware that both, Christianity and Islam, claim to be the only true religion and their God, respectively Allah alone is true. Both religions further hold that all people on earth have to accept this claim and join their particular religion to be saved and reach heaven or paradise. Both give a serious warning to those who don’t join: they will land up eternally in hell. These claims of exclusiveness are made without any evidence whatsoever, apart from the fact that the claims contradict each other, as both cannot be true. They require blind belief, and as blind, unreasonable belief is not natural for human beings, for many centuries it was enforced with state power and indoctrinated right from childhood with the fear of hell as the boogeyman.

However, many Christians do start pondering and believe in a ‘great power’, but not in the Christian God. For example, when I asked some fifty Christians in Germany whether they believe that Hindus who heard about Jesus Christ, but do not convert, will go to hell, nobody said yes. Even a priest said no. And not a single German I met was in favour of missionary activity in India. Yet Pope John Paul II declared in India the intention of the Church to plant the cross in Asia in the new millennium and considered India as a field for a rich harvest, which goes completely against ‘respectful coexistence’.

Maybe Your Holiness is under the impression that Hinduism is a depraved religion and Hindus would do well to accept the Christian God instead of their multiple gods. Such an impression would be completely wrong. There is no other religion that is –unjustly – denigrated as badly as Hinduism. Sorry to say that Christian (including Catholic) missionaries are in the forefront of this vilification campaign. Few people in the west know how profound India’s ancient tradition is.

The advantage of having a perfect person as a friend and guide on the spiritual path was known in India, but till some 2000 years ago nobody claimed that ‘only’ Krishna or ‘only’ Ram or ‘only’ Buddha can lead to salvation and that whoever does not believe it, goes to hell. “Truth is One, the wise call it by many names”, the Indian rishis declared and listed different names of gods. That was at a time, when Christianity was nowhere in sight.

An ageing master grew tired of his apprentice’s complaints. One morning, he sent him to get some salt. When the apprentice returned, the master told him to mix a handful of salt in a glass of water and then drink it.

“How does it taste?” the master asked.

“Bitter,” said the apprentice.

The master chuckled and then asked the young man to take the same handful of salt and put it in the lake. The two walked in silence to the nearby lake and once the apprentice swirled his handful of salt in the water, the old man said, “Now drink from the lake.”

As the water dripped down the young man’s chin, the master asked, “How does it taste?”

“Fresh,” remarked the apprentice.

“Do you taste the salt?” asked the master.

“No,” said the young man. At this the master sat beside this serious young man, and explained softly,

“The pain of life is pure salt; no more, no less. The amount of pain in life remains exactly the same. However, the amount of bitterness we taste depends on the container we put the pain in. So when you are in pain, the only thing you can do is to enlarge your sense of things. Stop being a glass. Become a lake.”
