A Great Lesson

  • A Great Lesson

Saints teach us only what they themselves have practiced. That is why their advice has the power to do us good.

The great Guru Ramkrishna Paramhansa had a poor woman among His disciples. One day, she came to Him with her son and said, “Gurudev, my son wants to eat sweets every day. This habit is spoiling his teeth, and I also cannot afford to buy them for him everyday. My advice, warning and scoldings have all been in vain. Please give him some advice and also bless him so that he stops the bad habit.”

Ramkrishna looked at the boy, but instead of talking to him, asked the woman to bring him back after two weeks.

The woman brought the boy to Him again after two weeks. As both sat down, Shri Ramkrishna kindly looked at the boy and said, “My dear son, is it true that you trouble your mother for sweets every day?” The boy hung his head and said, “Yes, Sir,” and became silent. “You are an intelligent boy. You know that those sweets are spoiling your teeth. Your mother, too, is worried about you. If she spends money on sweets everyday, how can she buy new books and good clothes for you? Don’t you think you are making a mistake?”

Ramkrishna’s words touched the boy’s heart. He looked at Ramkrishna and said, “Yes, Sir” and became silent again. “Then, will you stop asking for sweets from today?” asked Ramkrishna in an appealing tone. The boy smiled this time and said, “Yes, Sir, I will stop troubling my mother for sweets from today and stop eating them everyday.”

Ramkrishna, pleased with the boy’s reply, lovingly drew him close and said: “My son, you are a nice boy. You understand what is good and what is bad for you. You will surely grow up to be a happy man.” As the boy bowed down in Namaskar, Ramkrishna blessed him and turned to the other devotees.

After the boy went out into the garden, his grateful mother asked Ramkrishna, “Gurudev, why did you make us wait for two weeks to give these few words of advice?” Ramkrishna smiled and said, “You see, when you came two weeks ago, I, too, was in the habit of eating sweets brought by devotees. How could I ask your son not to do something which I myself was doing almost everyday? So, from that day I stopped eating sweets. That gave me enough strength and power to advise your son to do what I myself have done. Only when we preach what we practice, are our words full of sincerity and appeal to the listener.”

All the devotees in the room felt that they, too, had learnt a great lesson from Ramkrishna.

Moral: As this story shows, the most effective way to tell others about how to do spiritual practice or live righteously, is by practicing it ourselves. This way there is Truth behind it since we have practiced it and experienced it. Otherwise, we may find that others do not take such advice seriously.

Bhagwad Geeta

Sukh dukhe samae krutva labhaalabhau jayajayau Tato yuddhay yujjyasva naivam paapvaapsyasi - Shrimad Bhagvad Gita (2.38)

Meaning: Prepare yourself for the battle without thinking about happiness or distress, loss or gain, victory or defeat; in fighting such a war, you shall never incur any sin. Implied Meaning: If one becomes the cause of death of someone, according to the theory of fruits of action (Karma-phal nyay), in one birth or the other, one will have to die at the hands of the deceased person. This is the theory of action (Karma).

But here, Lord Krushna tells Arjuna, “If you will wage a war, considering victory-defeat, gain-loss and happiness and sorrow to be alike, such a war will not incur any sin.” A seeker, who does not in the least, get affected by victory-defeat, gain-loss and happiness and sorrow, is known as Stithpradnya (one who remains unperturbed by external factors). Such a Stithpradnyya ’s actions are Akarma Karma (action which does not result in either a positive or negative accrual), meaning the fruits of action do not accrue. The situation of Stithpradnyata becomes attainable at a spiritual level of 80%, such seekers perform their duty, without being bound to the action. Such seekers are Jeevmukt (liberated souls) and are saints Sadguru level (sadguru is higher than the level of guru as per spiritual science) .

Below this level, the fruits of action of every deed have to be endured; this is an issue worth paying attention to. In the times to come, a Dharma Kraanti (War of Righteousness) will happen; thus, seekers must act with a attitude of Akarma Karma (action which does not result in either a positive or negative accrual), while becoming an associate in that war; or else, the principles of the fruits of action will apply to them too. To this end, a seeker must pay particular attention to spiritual practice (Sadhana). The better Vyashti Sadhana (spiritual practice at an individual plane) one does, the higher would be the impact on Samashti Sadhana ( spiritual practice to uplift the society spiritually).

Thus, along with Samashti, Vyashti-level Sadhana holds a special importance; but today, a majority of the Hindutva-vaadi ( Hinduttva based) and nationalist organisations are devoid of this spiritual viewpoint. Hence, their members too, suffer from deficiency of such an approach.

Marriage and Choice

Marriage and Choice

Q: I realize how attached I am to some of my desires and dreams, such as, having a family for example. Do I have to practice detachment to make it happen? Does the spiritual path involve detachment from all of our desires?

Sri Sri: Look, if you have too many desires that is a problem. it is too scattered. Focus on one desire at a time.
Do you really want to get married? Why didn’t you do it so far? Are you being too picky and choosy? When the time comes you don’t go ahead, and later on you think you cannot find anybody.

Once a gentleman who was in his 60’s came to me and said, ‘Gurudev, I am looking for a soul mate, but I haven't found one’.
I said, 'Wait for another 15 years, you’ll find her in heaven'.
You know, don’t be too fussy about it. Look for a good person and get married. Even if they’re not good, you can change them, make them better!

I want to tell you a story about the Shakespeare of India. Have you heard about him? His name was Kalidasa and he is called the Shakespeare of India because he wrote some of the most excellent work in Sanskrit literature.
If anyone wants to learn Sanskrit, they cannot miss Kalidasa. How he became Kalidasa is very interesting.
There was a great king, a very well known emperor of India. He had a daughter and his daughter was very beautiful. She was very intelligent, very smart and knew everything with perfection. So it was very difficult for the king to find a suitable match because she had to interview him.
See, in India, in the ancient times, women had all the power! It is the women who chose men, like Sita had her own Swayamvara. A Swayamvara is a ceremony where the woman can choose the person with whom she wants to get married.

So, the story goes, all the princes from the princely states were invited. Princes from many places flocked there because they had heard about her intelligence and her beauty. Some were very scared, as she would ask them a question and nobody could answer her questions.

So she rejected everybody, and year after year this kept happening. The king was a little worried but the prime minister was quite annoyed. She probably insulted him and the story goes that he was annoyed with her. The prime minister thought, ‘I have to teach this shrew a lesson, I have to tame her'.
So once he was passing by the forest and he saw a wood cutter who was sitting on the branch of a tree and cutting the head of the branch!. Suddenly an idea struck him and he said, ‘Hey come down!'

When he came down he said, 'You come with me'.
The woodcutter agreed and the minister asked him to be silent and only answer the questions with hand gestures. So he dressed the woodcutter up a little bit, and took him to the palace. He went to the princess and said, ‘I have brought a really brilliant guy for you’.
She said, ‘Okay, I will propose three questions to him’.
So she asked him, what is the truth of the world, he answered showing his index finger.

Then she asked, how the creation was created, and he answered by gesturing the number two with his hand.
The third question also passed in a similar fashion and she was very impressed. So she got married to him. When she got married, then she realized that he did not even know to write an alphabet. He was just a wood cutter in the forest. She felt cheated, but during those days in India, once you marry, that is it. You marry with all the five elements as a witness and then you are wedded for life.

Now she felt very cheated. She went to the temple and she cried before the Mother Divine. Then she realized how arrogant she was. She rejected so many people and caused pain to so many because she was trying to choose someone better, someone who could defeat her, but look what happened. She wanted to be defeated in a different sense, but she got defeated in another sense. She does this and she goes into deep meditation.
It is said, at that time, the Mother Divine came and asked this man, who was sitting there completely bewildered, to stretch his tongue out. So he stretched his tongue and she wrote Om on it. With this experience he immediately started reciting a poem called Smalaya Tandegam, and from then on he was known as the Kalidasa.

Kalidasa wrote the most exquisite of literature and wonderful poetry; such deep description, such intelligence, and so much pun in it. It is considered very beautiful.

So if you get somebody who is not up to your mark, I tell you, you have the ability to change them! This is the reason why I said this story. Believe in it (ability) and move on. If it doesn't happen over a few years, you have your way and they have their way.

1. Why sastras talk about only one sun when there are many suns?

Pic sent by Sanjeev K Kumar.

IMPORTANT BLEND OF SCIENCE AND SASTRAS:

1. Why sastras talk about only one sun when there are many suns?
2. How small moon can hide big sun during eclipses?

COUNSELLING:

Vivek Pandian asked like this:

“Hare krishna prabhuji... I hav few doubts for which i haven't got convincing answers.

1. According to shastras if there is only one sun, what abt other stars that we see in sky? Even they hav their own planetary system!

2. The moon is farther than the sun from earth, if thats the case how does solar eclipse takes place? I.e moon coming in between sun and earth”

REPLY:

Who said that sastras say that there are only one planet or sun? There are many planets and each planet is illuminated by a sun.
There are innumerable planets and suns in the material creations of Lord.

However, in spritual planets, there is no sun. Lord says that all the spritual planets are naturally glowing with the rays coming out of the body of Lord. Sun is needed only in material planets. For our solar system, there is one sun and many planets. Similarly, there are innumerable suns and related planets. Even the unmanned MANGALYAN sent by India’s ISRO has to travel one full year to reach Mars’ orbit. How these scientists are going to scale all these innumerable planets?

So, as this sun is closer to us, it is hot. If you watch the sky at night, you can see so many stars that are glowing. As there are far away from this earth, they are not hot.

Srila prabhupada has written a nice book namely EASY JOURNEY TO OTHER PLANETS in which he explains about Lord’s creations.

We can reach so many planetary systems and solar systems through spritual practice without the need for a sattelite.

Let us read what Srila prabhupada spoke of these planetary systems of material worlds in a conversation with reporters in Melbourne, Australia, on June 29, 1974:

Reporter 3: Your Divine Grace, in your books you talk about Brahmaloka, which, I suppose, is heaven, where we will at last see God.

Srila Prabhupada: No. First of all, heaven is simply a higher material planetary system, where you cannot directly see God. There are many material lokas, or planetary systems, and heaven is one of them, and of course Brahmaloka is one. Don't you see? There are so many material planetary systems, with innumerable planets. The planetary systems include Brahmaloka, Chandraloka, Varunaloka, Suryaloka, and so many others.

Reporter 3: So when we speak of heaven, are we speaking of a physical place? Would one be on a physical planet?

Srila Prabhupada: Just consider the planets in this universe that you see each day and night. Are they physical or not? Take the sun. The sun is not a physical planet?

Reporter 3: It is.

Srila Prabhupada: What do you mean by "physical."

Reporter 3: Well, actually existing on a material...

Srila Prabhupada: At night don't you see so many planets existing -- innumerable planets? Are they physical or not?

Reporter 3: Stars and planets. They are physical, yes.

Srila Prabhupada: Yes. Consider this example. When you say "United States of America," you are talking about an actual place. There are living entities -- men and mountains and rivers. Everything is there.

Similarly, all these other planets in this universe -- they are inhabited by living entities. There are similarly cities and towns and mountains and rivers and oceans. Everything is there -- though of a unique pattern on each planet.

So in heaven, everything is of a superior quality, a superior pattern. As a result, in your present body you are not able to go and live there. Even on this single planet, there are widely varying climatic conditions. In the Arctic region some living entities can live, but for us it, is very difficult to live there. One place is suitable for one kind of man; another place is suitable for another.

So from planet to planet, and from place to place on each planet, you'll find living entities. And these living entities have received various kinds of material bodies just suitable to various conditions.

For instance, you cannot live within the ocean, but just for that reason you cannot say that nobody can live within the ocean. That would be foolishness. Simply you must admit you cannot live there. But there are so many varieties of fish, and they are living within the ocean very comfortably.

So don't try to transfer your present experience to other living entities. That is not a very good argument. Now, here on this planet many of the so-called scientists -- they are saying that on other planets there are no living entities. Why? These so-called scientists are putting forth so many reasons: "This element is lacking." "That element is lacking."

But what, Mr. Scientist, do you know of how this or that condition may affect beings with bodies vastly different from anything you have experienced? You know virtually nothing about the other planets. Then how can you say there are no living entities there?”

So we can not materially scale all the suns and planets created by Lord Krishna.

Next you have asked about solar eclipse. Sun is big. Moon is small. Then how sun is hidden by moon.

Actually, the distance of sun is more. So, sun appears like having the equal size of moon. Moon is near to earth. So, though it is smaller than sun, it appears to have the same size of sun. So, on the day of solar eclipse, the moon comes on the same angle where sun is coming. So, when they come in the same angle, the sun is hidden from our sight by moon. When they move further, the sun starts to appear again. Thats all. Moon is not actually hiding the sun. It just goes on the same angle of sun.

Hope you are clear:

TAIL PIECE:

When solar eclipse or lunar eclipse ocurs, our sastras advise us not to take heavy food and they advise us to take full bath after the end of eclipse. WHy?

Because, when eclipse occurs, the sun’s Ultra violet rays are totally stopped by moon from falling on earth. When the moon and sun moves away, more quantity of U-V rays start to fall on our body. So, our skin and head is affected to some extent. U-V rays are very harmful to skin and brain.

So, the sastras advise us to take bath and clear our body from the deposit of U-V rays. And, when eclipse occurs, the cumulative attraction of sun and moon towards earth will be high. That is why, the waves in the sea are agitated during eclipse time. So, heavy food will take very long time to get digested. So, we have to take less food.

Our sastras are not stories. They are 1000% true. If we follow them, it is good.

Thanks for making me recollect scientific aspects of our universe also.

Hare Krishna.

Samartha Ramdas Swami was a great Saint who lived a few centuries ago in a village called Jambgaon in Maharashtra, India. In Hishonour, the people of Jambgaon, till today celebrate His birth anniversary during the nine-day festival of God Rām (Rāmnavami) every year.

At that time, there lived an old couple called Balkrushna and Putanabai, who were great devotees of Shrī Rām and Samartha RamdasSwami. They would spend their days chanting (repeating God's Name) and praying. Every year, they would chant and walk all the way from their village to Jambgaon, to take part in this festival and to pay respects to Samartha Ramdas Swami. They had been doing this for the last 60 years.

However, one year, while returning from the festival, they found it very difficult to walk further, due to old age. So they prayed to Ramdas Swami, "Swamiji, from now on we will not be able to take part in the festival. Due to old age, we will not be able to walk for such a long distance. However, we are very grateful that we could travel every year for the last sixty years only because of your grace."

Next morning, Swamiji appeared in Balkrushna's dream. He said to Balkrushna, "Dear Balkrushna, do not worry. Celebrate the festival in your city. I will visit you there." Balkrushna was very happy by this dream.

A year passed. According to the guidance given, the couple started making preparations to celebrate the festival in their home. Eight days of the festival passed. Balkrushna and Putanabai eagerly waited for Swamiji's visit.

However, when the rituals for the ninth day started, unexpectedly, another great Saint, Shrī Gajanan Mahārājvisited their celebrations. Balkrushna and Putanabai were surprised to see Him, but were very happy to have the satsang (company) of a Saint and welcomed Him wholeheartedly.

As Balkrushna was paying respects to Shri Gajanan Maharaj, he suddenly saw Samartha Ramdas Swami in His place. After a few moments, he could not see Ramdas Swami, and saw Shri Gajanan Maharaj again. Balkrushna was very confused, because he kept seeing Ramdas Swami and Shri Gajanan Maharaj one after another.

Finally, Ramdas Swami appeared to him and said, "Dear Balkrushna, I have come to visit you today, as promised."

From this episode, Balkrushna realised that though Saints look different from outside, they are all one and the same.

Moral:
We too, may feel that the various Saints or Deities are different from each other due to the way they look, guide behave, etc. However, if we develop faith like Balkrushna and Putanabai, we too, will experience that all Saints are one, being the forms of the same God. Daily chanting (repeating) of God’s Name is a sure way to develop such faith.

The Fear of the possibility of things not working out the way we expect, prevents us from Living Life fully...
Sometimes we look at people with mistrust.. Behind this is nothing but our own expectations of:
- How Life should be!
- How People should be!
- and How Things should be..!
What If things do not work out the way we Expect..!! Bothers us Continually..

Living in the Moment... and Acceptance of whatever Life throws at us is perhaps sometimes not so easy..Yet SURRENDER carries us through...

A rural adage goes thus: “Baadhe poot pita ke dharme, upaje apne karme”, meaning ‘Dharmaacharan done by parents has positive effect upon the children and hard work is essential to do farming.’ Nowadays, neither do parents do Sadhana, nor Dharmaacharan. On the contrary, they indulge in blind imitation of the satanic characters of western culture and consequently, become sad when their children become directionless. Actually, children love emulation and easily imbibe the traditions followed by family members. Sadhana is so subtle that it becomes inherent in the culture of the family. No other culture in the world, except Vedic culture is based on Sattva-Guna (essence of purity). Hence, it is the basic Dharma of every parent to sow the seeds of Vedic cultural traditions in their children.

"Truth is an intuitional flash, it is not Intellectual".
