The Guru

When Guru gets any work done through disciple, He develops the capacity of disciple.

Forum for Hindu Awakening

The Guru thinks constantly of 'how much and what all can I do for my disciple!'. The disciple is also getting immense love from the Guru. The Guru develops detachment in the disciple's mind and gives him knowledge and devotion. As compared to a disciple (about his own spiritual progress), the Guru feels more yearning towards the disciple's spiritual progress. Therefore Guru only gets everything done through disciple for disciple's spiritual progress. Through this Guru develops the capacity of the disciple to do more spiritual practice.

Happiness

"Released Monday, the 2013 World Happiness Report ranks the happiest countries around the globe, with Denmark, Norway and Switzerland leading the pack.

The report is the second of its kind released by a coalition of researchers including John F. Helliwell of the University of British Columbia and Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, the London School of Economics's Richard Layard and Jeffrey D. Sachs, director of Columbia University's Earth Institute. The team drew upon Gallup World Poll data from the the past three years to rank the 156 countries on aspects such as healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices and social support."

- An excerpt from an article by Sara Gates, Huffington Post

Happiness is something that we all strive for in life, but have you ever wondered why it is that we yearn to be happy? A simplistic answer would be, "Happiness feels good!"

The real reason, though, is that deep within each of us, is a soul (ātmā). The soul is the God within us and one of the qualities of God, is perpetual Bliss (Ānand). Bliss is that happiness which is of the highest order that is not dependent on anything else. Subliminally, we know that a superlative form of happiness (i.e. Bliss), does exist and we struggle to find this natural state of Bliss.

But we make one big mistake. We look for this happiness outside ourselves instead of trying to tap the Bliss within.

Once a person said in jest, “It is so unfortunate that God has created us with our eyeballs facing outwards when we will only find unending happiness if we go within.”

And that is why we get captivated and, quite literally, entrapped by whatever we see in the outside world!

SAI SAMPADA

Ramana Hridayam

‘ATTEND TO WHAT YOU CAME FOR – VANTHA VELAI PAAR’

Through the light of a lamp, even darkness that exists a long distance away departs, but the darkness that is present at the foot of the lamp-post is not removed by the lamp. In the same way, those disciples who stay a long way away from the Guru get redeemed by worshipping in their hearts the jnana-Guru who cannot be limited by time or space. Even so, some of those who get the good fortune of staying physically close to the Guru, like his shadow, do not become ripe in jnana, losing their ego-darkness, but die ripe only in physical age. This is due to their immaturity.
Guru Vachaka Kovai v 152

MURUGANAR: The Guru is the shining sun of the Self who removes inner darkness through his true nature. In truth, he is the space of consciousness that has neither rising nor setting. It has therefore been said, ‘the jnana-Guru who cannot be limited by time or space’. The point of the verse if this: those who, through rare good fortune, have reached a jnana-Guru should not forget the purpose for which they came to him. By focusing their entire attention on it day and night, and by taking his grace as the primary support, they should definitely obtain the good fortune of the Self.
Naladiyar says: ‘If he who has obtained the good fortune of associating closely with sages, which cannot be bought by any amount of wealth, spends his time wastefully, he is a person of immature mind.’

Naladiyar is a 400-verse Tamil work, thought to have been composed more than a thousand years ago, that mostly contains teachings on morality and the spiritual life. It was composed by Jain monks.

Once for example, some awkward problems concerning the ashram management cropped up. Without being directly concerned, I [Kunju Swami] was worried about them, as I felt that failure to solve them satisfactorily would impair the good name of the ashram. One day two or three devotees went to Sri Bhagavan and put some of these problems before him. I happened to enter the hall while they were talking about them, and he immediately turned to me and asked me why I had come in at this time and why I was interesting myself in such matters. I did not grasp the meaning of the question, so Sri Bhagavan explained that a person should occupy himself only with that purpose with which he had originally come to the ashram. He asked me what my original purpose had been.

‘To receive Sri Bhagavan’s grace,’ I replied.
‘Then occupy yourself with that alone,’ he said.
After a pause he continued by asking me whether I had any interest in matters concerning the ashram management when I first arrived. I told him that I had not.
‘Then,’ he said, ‘concentrate on the original purpose of your coming here.’

In Tamil this is: 'Vantha Velai Par:'

[The Power of the Presence, part two, p. 58]

BHAGAVAN: Forgetting the lofty purpose of coming [to the Sadguru] and developing an obsession for the non-Self is a deception brought about by immaturity in those who are dull-minded.
[Padamalai, p. 255, v 19]

STORY TIME:

A Story sent by Gayatri Krishna Kumar

Everything Is Connected:

There once was a farmer who grew award- winning corn. Each year he entered his corn in the state fair where it won a blue ribbon.

One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his
neighbors.

"How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?" the reporter asked.

"Why sir," said the farmer, "didn't you know? The winds picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn."

(Rajan's Note: Cross Pollination means the seeds from the neighbours corn fly in air and falls in the field of this farmer and hence he gets more grains)

He is very much aware of the connectedness of life. His corn cannot improve unless his neighbor’s corn also improves.

So it is with our lives. Those who choose to live well must help others to live well, for the value of a life is measured by the lives it touches. And those who choose to be happy must help others to find happiness, for the welfare of each is bound up with the welfare of all......
