SHANI DEV

SHANI DEV :

ASTROLOGY AND SHANI DEV :
According to Vedic astrology, Shani Bhagavan is one of the nine Navagraha or planets. Shani is considered to be the strongest malefic and a stern teacher who represents patience, effort, endeavour, and endurance; and who brings restrictions and misfortunes. However, a favourably-placed Shani on the horoscope of a person stands for a strong career, healthy life and everything positive for that person. In fact, a well-placed Shani in one's horoscope is something every astrology-believing Hindu hopes for, as no other 'graha' can bestow what a favourable Shani can. Shani placed "unfavourably", on the other hand, denotes troubles in all of the above. Shani is much feared by those Hindus who believe in astrology, as the "malefic" effects of his being unfavourably placed can be quite severe. However, it is to be remembered that any pleasure or pain that befalls a person during Shani's influence is not arbitrary; rather, it is the result of the person's own karma, now being manifested in the "presence" of Shani. Thus an "unfavourably-placed" Shani brings about the harsh results of one's bad karma, and vice-versa.The diseases which Lord Shani gives are decay, constriction, poor blood supply, atrophy, etc. and at mental level narrow mind, low thinking. These diseases need to be cured by Lord Shani rules and regulations only.
The planet Shani or Saturn revolves around the Sun in about 30 years, which means it passes through all the 12 rashis or moonsigns in 30 years. Thus Shani Bhagavan spends on an average about two and half years in each rashi or moonsign. This movement of Shani through the moonsigns carries great importance in Hindu astrology and horoscope predictions. The effect of Shani starts when it enters the previous rashi/moonsign to one's own birth rashi and stops when it leaves the rashi /moonsign after one's birth rashi. The total period of 7.5 years (2.5 years × 3) is called Saadesaati or "Elanata Shani", and is typically a period of great difficulty. When it occurs for a person foregoing Shani Maha Dasha the malefic effects of the planet are highly pronounced. It is said that Shani can reduce even a king to a pauper during such period.
Shani rules the signs Makara (Capricorn) and Kumbha (Aquarius), is exalted in Tula (Libra) and is debilitated in Mesha (Aries). Mercury, Venus, Rahu, Ketu are considered friendly towards Shani or Saturn, while the Sun, Moon and Mars are enemies. Guru or Jupiter maintains neutral relations with Shani. Shani is the lord of three nakshatras or lunar mansions: Pushya, Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada.
Shani Bhagavan has the following associations: his color is black or dark blue, metal is iron and gemstone is Blue Sapphire. His element or tattva is air, direction is west (where the sun sets and darkness begins) and he rules all seasons. The traditional foods for Shani are sesame seeds or black gram, black lentils or udad, his flower is the violet and he is linked to all black animals and all trees that are considered useless and ugly.
Shani rules over masses. Without the planet's blessings in one's horoscope, a mass following is difficult to come by. It is said that an exalted Saturn in the ascendant (or Lagna) of one's horoscope awards one with such leadership position entailing fame from and recognition among masses. More over, such people are said to have high commitment and perseverance for the task at hand. On the other hand, a debilitated Saturn in one's horoscope makes one's 'Karma' weak and such individual with debilitated Saturn is said to have poor commitment and perseverance towards duties and hence suffers in the process of completing one's karmic obligations. Hence 'Moksha' is difficult to come by without Shaniswara's blessings in one's horoscope.
Lord Shaniswara is also known as Needhiman(Judge). He only troubles the person during his dasa for the wrong doings. Even in Shani Dosha, if a person is Righteous & Devoted he is sure to come out of this period without any ill effects.
Lord Shaniswara is more known for his Blessings than his ill effects. No other graha is comparable with Lord Shani in terms of blessings. He showers with his blessings at the end of his dasha. His Adi-Devata is Prajapati and Pratyadi-Devata is Yama. Lord Shani tests the person patience, He tries to correct our immoral acts by creating frustrations, and delays. In the end He makes one conscious enough to understand the mistakes. He removes ignorance from mind by punishment, the benefits that He matures the soul of being and person turns copper to gold from within i.e. he begins to understand the Truths of life, the futility of his actions done out of ignorance. One comes to understand after Lord Shani periods that not much is in control of human beings. It is all Divine acting on human beings through the agents of Gods. Lord Shani is the greatest purifier, everything false will perish and only Truth will shine, that is His message. People born on number 8 are ruled by Lord Shani in numerology. It is a proven fact that number 8, 26 born on any month will have hardships in their life. The hardship have a purpose and it is important to identify the purpose in this lifetime. Remedies of appeasing Shani, includes taking responsibility of wrong actions,self-analysis and hard work.Donation of blue cloth on Saturdays and serving poor also helps.

understandings of true sanyasi and fake saadu /sanyasi in the sociaty

Beware of Fake Swamis and Hindu God Men

Fake Hindu swamis, sanyasis, babas, gurus and godmen thrive in a society which has not understood the true teachings of Sanatana Dharma (Hindu Religion). Therefore Hindus and other sections of the society which provide the opportunity and fertile ground for fraudsters in the guise of swamis to thrive in the name of Hinduism are equally at fault. Ignorant, miracle and fortune-seeking followers are the ones who help such fake swamis to prosper in our Hindu society.
Before Going to a Swami Read the Bhagavad Gita - the Greatest Guru
The Bhagavad Gita which narrates the essence of Hindu spirituality contains only 700 verses. There are excellent translation and commentary of Bhagavad Gita which cost less than 100 rupees. But majority of the Hindus have no time to read the 700 verses but spend thousands of rupees, hard earned money, energy and time visiting ashrams and spiritual centers of such fake babas and gurus.
If you make this an issue, immediately comes the answer, Bhagavad Gita is hard to digest for common people like us, we are ignorant.
It is for the common people that the learned and holy men of yesteryears have translated the Gita into all regional languages. They have provided excellent translations and have interpreted the great dialogue between Arjuna and Krishna into the simplest language.
Reading and understanding the Bhagavad Gita is not the real issue. If one has time and patience this can be easily achieved.
The real issue is that Gita doesn’t talk about methods to become super rich overnight. Neither do Gita have mantras to find treasures hidden underground or to get promotions or provide miracle cure to diseases. Gita also does not recommend pujas to destroy your enemies. And above all Gita does not predict the future.
Gita only teaches to you to attain Moksha and how to live a life of bliss on earth.
But the fake swamis and godmen only talk about future, money and predictions, pujas and innumerable homams to cure diseases where medical science has failed. Sadly, this is what many Hindus want to hear.
Majority of Hindus who go after Swamis are fortune seekers
Daily we get to hear about such fake swamis and their notorious activities – which include rape, illicit relationships, amassing wealth through dishonorable means – but this has not deterred many Hindus from approaching fraudsters in the guise of Swami. Why?
Both the fake Godmen, his followers and those who go after such swamis are fortune seekers. Godmen is using religion to become rich and conduct other antisocial activities. Followers are fortune seekers who want the help of an outside agency to reach God and bribe God and amass wealth, cure diseases, solve social problems and above all know the future.
The True Sanyasi
Shri Krishna never fought for Arjuna in the Mahabharata. Arjuna had to do all the fighting in Kurukshetra. Krishna is always there to remind us the Truth and give sane advice. The ultimate truth is that we have to do our work and no God will come to do it. Sadly this is not acceptable to many.
A true Sanyasi will never advertise. He/She is like a flower. People reach them following the fragrance. They will not even bother to talk to fortune-seekers. Silence is their best weapon which frustrate most fortune seekers in minutes. They might open up the knowledge treasure to a genuine seeker whom a true Sanyasi will easily identify – just like Ramakrishna identified Vivekananda.
A true sanyasi lives in the present - he will not have possessions - he might not even have the money to buy his next meal.
There is nothing new to say
Sanyasi and Godmen does not say anything new. Everything is found in the Hindu scriptures. All their words are borrowed from the Upanishads, Gita, Ramayana, Yoga Vasishta and Mahabharata. All these Holy Scriptures are readily available in shops and now on the internet for free. Pick any of these Holy Scriptures and read a few pages daily. Soon we will realize the futility of going to such fake gurus.
Hinduism believes in individual self realization and not borrowed or rented or bought self realization. Always remember the Brahman (God or Supreme Truth) that resides in the most respected guru or spiritual leader also resides in us. The only difference is that we have not bothered to realize it.
If we are falling into the trap of fake Sanyasis and Godmen, it is our fault.
And if you find that a swami is fake, never hesitate to report it to the authorities and write about it on the internet. Such fake swamis and God men should not find protection in Hindu religion.

Sri Ramakrishna on Prema

In a little while a number of elderly Brahmo devotees arrive from Calcutta. One of them is Thakurdas Sen. There is a big gathering of devotees in the room. Thakur is seated on the smaller cot. Facing north, with a smile on his face, he sits like a child, conversing happily with the Brahmo devotees.

Sri Ramakrishna (to the Brahmo devotees and others) — You people talk so much of prema. But is it such an ordinary thing? Chaitanya Deva was in the state of ecstatic love. There are two characteristics of ecstatic love. One is to forget the world, to become unaware of everything external in the love of God. Chaitanya Deva would think that it was Vrindavan when he was in any forest and it was the Jamuna river at the sight of the sea.

“The second characteristic is to have no attachment to the body one holds so dear. The conviction of the body as the self fully disappears.

“You cannot have prema till you have seen the Lord.

“There are some marks of God-realization. When the splendour of love manifests within, God-realization is not far away.

“What does the splendour of love mean? Discrimination, dispassion, compassion, service to the holy, company of the holy, chanting the name and glories of the Lord, truthfulness – all these.

“When one comes across these signs of love, one can know that the vision of God is not far away. By looking at the condition of the servant’s house, one can easily determine if a rich man has decided to visit it. First of all, all weeds are cleared, cobwebs are removed, and the floor of the house is cleaned. The rich man himself sends a cotton carpet, a hubble-bubble and other such things. Seeing all these things being carried to the house, everyone surmises that the visit of a gentleman is not far away.”

A Devotee — Sir, does one have to reason before being able to control the senses?

Sri Ramakrishna — That is a path – the path of discrimination. If you take to the path of devotion, the inner senses get controlled automatically. And it is easier. The more you develop love for the Lord, the less you care for the pleasures of the senses.

“When they lose their child, can the grief-stricken parents think of their bodily pleasures?

Desires - II

Question:  Let our sorrows come to an end - should one have or not have this desire?

Swami Ramsukhdasji:  One should not have any desires. If you desire to wipe out sorrow, then you will become an enjoyer of happiness. If you desire to become free of bondage, then you will become an enjoyer of salvation and of freedom. Do not even desire to break off the relationship with innate matters (jadataa), or else a very subtle form of ego will remain within. The point here is that there is absolutely nothing to be seeked out or to be received or to held on to.

The more that a spiritual aspirant is exclusively dependent on God, that much spiritual progress he will make. A sadhak must have no desires for himself, leave all to God. Then he becomes extraordinary and attains realization in totality. Therefore there must not be even the desire for one's own salvation. This is the best. Just like Narsiji had the vision of Shankara, at which time he asked for nothing from Him. He only said, that whatever you feel is appropriate for me, that you do. Man can only desire to the extent that he is able to envision. But beyond is the infinite essence. Beyond, the glories are extraordinary. If a spiritual aspirant does not hold on to his points, if he does not become complacent, then his Self will make immense spiritual progress.

From "Prashno Uttermanimala"

Question:  How to get rid of desire for worldly possessions and enjoyments?

Swami Ramsukhdasji:  We are busy hoarding and delighting in things that we know for certain to be perishable. This is a dangerous tendency on our part. We must change this attitude and begin to think about how we can bring greater happiness to others. Let this begin at home to start with. Our aim should be to bring greater happiness to our parents, spouse, children, but at the same time expecting nothing in return.

Generally we tend to only do and give happiness to those from whom we hope to get something in return. Here lies the main bondage. Therefore it is important that you do good to others without expecting anything in return.

From "Ancient Idealism for Modern day Living"

Question:  Desire for the world and desire for God, both desire appear quite contrary and opposing, do these reside in one place?

Swami Ramsukhdasji:  Yes, both these desires reside in one place. Where there is desire for enjoyment of worldly pleasures, there itself is also desire for salvation. When desire for worldly enjoyments are concluded, desire for God (Supreme Consciousness) will be awakened. Wiping out the desire for worldly desires will automatically on it's own result in fulfillment of desire for God. But worldly desires will never be satisfied. In spite of millions of births, then too these desires will remain un-fulfilled, and more so, new desires will continue to manifest - "Jimi pratilaabh, lobh adhikaayi."

From "The Bhagavad Gita - Sadhak Sanjivani"

Question:  How do both these desires reside in the same place?

Swami Ramsukhdasji:  One desire you have held on to, and the other desire is there innately in us (Self). Worldly desires you have grabbed onto, whereas, desire for God (Supreme Consciousness) is in you, in your Self. The desire to remain alive for ever, to have no lack of knowledge (ignorance) remaining in us, and to remain ever and eternally happy at all times - these desires are of the Self, whereas desire for enjoyment of worldly pleasures are not desires of the Self.

The inspiration behind all desires is your Self. If by the Self, if you leave worldly desires, then they can never remain or last. That whose fulfillment is impossible, should certainly be given up. The reason worldly desires are not fulfilled is because the world is "not" and deisre for God (Supreme Consciousness is fulfilled because that Supreme Consciousness "IS". Worldly objects never remain forever. They are destroyed. But God (Supreme Consciousness) ever remains.

Meaning of 'Hari OM' from Advaita Standpoint

Hari OM is a short form for 'Hari OM Tat Sat'
Om is beyond 3 gunas and goes into turiya state. From OM Maya was created. OM is the representation of Nirguna Brahman. It is the only Mantra that can effortlessly (in hindi: sahajta se) establish or merge the seeker in Nirvikalp Samadhi.
Hara means to remove troubles / bondages / Doshas / Granthis. Hari means one who removes troubles and bondages i.e. Remover of bondage.
so hari is Remover of Bondage
Aum / Om is one which takes one beyond Gunas in to turiya. All 3 Gunas (Satva, Rajas, Tamas) are doshas and OM takes one above these doshas, breaking Hriday Granthi, breaking bondages into the Realm of Atman / Brahman which is Sat-Chit-Ananda. I would collectively call Dosha, bondages, granthis as bondages (Bandhan).
So, Can I translate it as (My salutations (pranams) to) OM, the remover of Bondages, who takes one into the realm of Sat-Chit-Ananda Atman.
Hari is also connected with Shri Vishnu, who is the remover of bondages, granthis, etc.

What is the meaning of word 'Darshan'?

When we say (in Hindi):

'मुझे ईश्वर के दर्शन करने है '

Common meaning and Translation is:

'I want to have vision of God.',

Now, let's analyze a common statement:

'I am going to the temple to have vision of God'

Here, Darshan generally means 'To see'

Now the question is, when: why after going to temple we join hands and then close eyes???

... and if at all we want to see, where to see and where to go?

Closing eyes, to me means that the same God is within us whom we re worshiping outside as an image or idol and go go deep inside us.

Darshan means 'to know' and not 'to see'

Another question is:

What will you call Darshan shastras? 'To see' shastras or 'to know' shastras. The knower of darshan shastras is called as darshan shastri.

I recall a discourse where a Swamiji says, Darshan means to know. If you think it is 'to see' then what does Darshan shastra mean? Do you go to a place with lots of mirrors, some concave, some convex, reflecting funny fat or slim or stretched, etc images??

In Gita Sri Krishna says, My Birth and Karma are divine and those who know me and my karma are not different from me.

The correct meaning of Darshan is 'to know' and not 'to see'.

BHAKTI

Sri Ramakrishna on classes of Devotees

Sri Ramakrishna : "There are two classes of devotees. One class has the nature of the kitten. The kitten depends completely on its mother. It accepts whatever its mother does for it. The kitten only cries, 'Mew, mew!' It doesn't know what to do or where to go. Sometimes the mother puts the kitten near the hearth, sometimes on the bed.

Devotees of this class give God the power of attorney and thus become free of all worry. The Sikhs said to me that God was kind. I said to them: 'How is that? He is our Father and our Mother. Shouldn't parents bring up their children after begetting them? Do you mean to say that the neighbours will look after them?' Devotees of this class have an unwavering conviction that God is our Mother and our Father.

"There is another class of devotees. They have the nature of the young monkey. The young monkey clings to its mother with might and main. The devotees who behave like the young monkey have a slight idea of being the doer. They feel: 'We must go to the sacred places; we must practise japa and austerity; we must perform worship with sixteen articles as prescribed by the sastras. Only then shall we be able to realize God.' Such is their attitude.

"The aspirants of both classes are devotees of God. The farther you advance, the more you will realize that God alone has become everything. He alone does everything. He alone is the Guru and He alone is the Ishta. He alone gives us knowledge and devotion.

"The farther you advance, the more you will see that there are other things even beyond the sandal-wood forest — mines of silver and gold and precious gems. Therefore go forward.

"But how can I ask people to go forward? If worldly people go too far, then the bottom will drop out of their world. One day Keshab was conducting a religious service. He said, 'O God, may we all sink and disappear in the river of bhakti!' When the worship was over I said to him: 'Look here. How can you disappear altogether in the river of bhakti? If you do, what will' happen to those seated behind the screen? (The Master referred to the ladies.) But do one thing: sink now and then, and come back again to dry land.'"
